Qualified Special Education Assistants (SEAs) are in high demand and there are many opportunities in our growing community. Working with a team in a supportive environment, SEAs build strong connections with students to enhance their academic and social/emotional growth and independence.


SEAs work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals and paraprofessionals assisting with implementation of individual education plans, learning and behavioral support, personal care and a variety of other duties. Once hired, a casual employee can view all internal postings for Term and Continuing positions and has the contractual right to post into vacancies to secure more consistent and/or guaranteed hours.

We hire Special Education Assistants who have completed programs at the following institutions; however, we may consider candidates from other institutions if the applicant has additional SEA school-based experience (beyond a practicum).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Grade 12 graduation and possession of a Special Education Teacher Assistant Certificate, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Ability to be flexible to meet the varying academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students. Emergency First Aid Certificate (or Standard First Aid) including sufficient medical knowledge to effectively cope with seizures. Ability to interact with the students in an effective manner. Ability to communicate effectively using tact, discretion, and diplomacy in contacts of a difficult or specialized nature. Ability to determine, judge and select appropriate course of action within limits of established methods and procedures. Working knowledge of behaviour management techniques and task analysis techniques. Basic knowledge of computers. Physical ability to perform the required duties. Completion of the Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders (POPARD) training on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or an equivalent combination of training.
