SPECIAL CARE AIDE

APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED FOR TWO (2) PART-TIME POSITIONS FOR SPECIAL CARE AIDE FOR THE ATHABASCA HEALTH AUTHORITY FACILITY.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting clients/patients/residents and special needs individuals to meet their needs through activities of daily living inclusive of physical, spiritual and emotional needs. Also help individuals maintain as much independence as possible in a safe environment.

JOB ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Communication:

Communicate with all members of the health care team regarding care required and following care plans. Report on the health status, reactions and behaviour or condition of a client/patient/resident. Carry out care plan activities, following care and medication physicians, nurse practitioner and/or nurse orders. Ensure that client/patient/resident personal health information is kept con?dential. Reassure and listen to concerns of individuals or family members. Provide support in emotional, spiritual and social well being. Provide companionship in daily activities of life. Encourage and teach families in care to assist the client/patient/resident to retain independence and to maximize familiarity of surroundings, people and things. Good phone etiquette. Documentation of care. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse or LPN, may administer non-prescription oral medication and apply topical medications as per policy.
Physical:

Current immunizations. Participate in housekeeping and laundry as required. Answer call bells. Be able to lift clients/residents. Practice universal precautions consistently, wear Personal Protective Equipment when required. Manage time and workload according to priority. Keep a safe and clean environment, equipment, food handling procedures. Make beds, tidy rooms and encourage and assist clients/patients/residents to participate in housekeeping and meal preparations in their household. Be alert and aware of personal duty responsibilities in emergency situations. Follow guidelines for all duties, including safe lifting procedures.
Special Needs:

Assist in providing care that helps enhance the client/patient/ resident's self-esteem. Support client/patient/resident with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming and dress and personal hygiene, eating, helping to move in bed, transferring, position, ambulation assistance, and toileting. Assist individuals to be involved in the day to day activities in their household, including food preparation and meals, Follow assignment of client/patient/resident care for that shift. Carry out duties as assigned by the supervisor. Bathing. Grooming (comb hair, shave, set hair). Oral care (brush natural teeth, brush dentures). Bowel and bladder care including catheters and ostomy bags. Skin, nails, eye care. Take vital signs. Ensure proper hydration. Assist with treatments as ordered by doctor/care plan (bowel care suppositories and enemas, ointments and simple dressings). Supervise meal times in communal eating areas. Assist in the planning and execution of group activities. Help individuals carry out activities. Promote contact with family and friends. Communicate in a respectful and caring manner. Assist recreational aides with planned activities. Be able to work alone or as part of a team. Attend monthly staff meetings and educational inservices. Respect the con?dentiality of clients/residents' personal and health information unless required to release information. Follow policies, procedures and regulations. Person must be willing to travel with the Nursing Team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Home Care/Special Care Aide course; Grade 10 and/or acceptable combination of education and experience; must have excellent communication skills; ?uent in the Dene language and English is required; self-motivated individual who is creative; Background in health would be considered an asset.
