Vancouver, BC, CA, Canada

Job Description

Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled PHP/WordPress Developer to join our small, agile team and take ownership of our WooCommerce-powered online store. In this role, you will build and maintain WordPress/WooCommerce features that drive our e-commerce platform, ensuring a smooth shopping experience for customers. You'll work in a close-knit team where your contributions have a direct impact, with the flexibility to work remotely, on-site, or in a hybrid setup. This is an opportunity to apply your expertise in PHP and web development to a fast-paced online retail environment and help shape our technology stack using industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Develop & Customize WordPress Solutions: Design, build, and customize WordPress themes and plugins (including WooCommerce extensions) using PHP and MySQL to implement new e-commerce features and integrations?

Optimize Performance

: Continuously optimize website performance and loading speeds, ensuring pages are responsive and fast for a seamless user experience?

Maintain Security & Stability

: Implement and uphold website security best practices (e.g. input validation, updates, backups) and perform regular WordPress/WooCommerce core and plugin updates to keep the platform secure and stable?

Integrations:

Integrate third-party APIs and services (e.g. payment gateways, shipping providers) to enhance site functionality and support business operations?

Troubleshooting

: Monitor the site's functionality and troubleshoot & resolve issues promptly as they arise - addressing bugs in themes/plugins or server environment to minimize downtime?

Collaboration

: Work closely with cross-functional team members - from design and marketing to operations - to gather requirements and deliver user-friendly, effective solutions that meet business goals?

Communicate progress regularly and participate in code reviews to maintain high code quality.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience

: 3+ years of hands-on development experience in PHP web development. Proven track record in building custom WordPress sites or plugins (WooCommerce e-commerce experience is highly preferred)?

PHP & WordPress Mastery

: Strong proficiency in PHP and deep knowledge of the WordPress ecosystem (themes, plugins, and WordPress core internals). Ability to create and modify custom themes/plugins to tailor the CMS to business needs.

Version Control (Git)

: Expertise using Git for version control - comfortable with branching, pull requests, and collaborative workflows on platforms like GitHub or GitLab?

You should be able to manage code merges and deployments through Git confidently.

Database & SQL:

Solid SQL skills, particularly with MySQL. Able to write native SQL queries and optimize database interactions for performance (e.g. crafting efficient queries for reports or troubleshooting)?

JavaScript & Front-End:

Proficiency in JavaScript for client-side functionality. Experience with HTML5/CSS3 and libraries like jQuery is expected for front-end interactions?

(Familiarity with modern ES6+ syntax or React/Angular is a plus, though not required.)

Problem-Solving:

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to debug complex issues and implement reliable solutions in a production environment?

Attention to detail is critical, especially when making changes to a live e-commerce site.

Communication & Teamwork:

Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to explain technical concepts in clear terms to non-technical teammates?

Experience collaborating within a small team, giving and receiving constructive code feedback, and coordinating work in an Agile process.

Self-Management:

Self-motivated and able to work independently, managing your tasks and deadlines with minimal supervision in a remote or hybrid work setting?

A track record of reliability and accountability in previous roles is important in our flexible work environment.

Preferred (Nice-to-Have) Skills

Agile Tools:

Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development workflows and experience using project management tools like Jira to track issues and progress.

TypeScript:

Exposure to TypeScript and modern front-end build tools. Ability to work with or migrate JavaScript code to TypeScript is a plus (e.g. for custom theme components or Gutenberg blocks).

Bash & Linux:

Comfort with the command line and Bash scripting in a Linux environment?

Experience debugging server configuration issues or automating tasks on Linux (LAMP stack knowledge) will be beneficial.

Additional Tools: Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, or cloud hosting (AWS, etc.) is an advantage, as it aligns with our emphasis on robust, maintainable code (not required but nice to have).

What We Offer

Competitive Compensation:

A base salary in the $60K-$80K range plus an annual performance bonus. Salary will be commensurate with your experience and skill set.

Flexible Work Environment:

We support remote work and flexible schedules?

You can work from our office, from home, or a mix of both. We value outcomes over hours, so we trust you to manage your time effectively.

Impact & Growth:

As part of a small team, you'll have significant ownership of projects and the ability to influence the product roadmap. Your work will directly shape the success of our e-commerce platform. We also offer opportunities for professional growth - as the company expands, you could take on leadership, mentorship, or larger project responsibilities over time?

Collaborative Culture:

We foster a supportive, learning-oriented culture. You'll work closely with experienced colleagues in a no-bureaucracy environment where new ideas are encouraged. Expect regular knowledge-sharing, code reviews, and the freedom to propose better solutions using best practices.

If you are a PHP developer with deep WordPress/WooCommerce expertise and you thrive in a fast-paced e-commerce setting, we'd love to hear from you. Join us to build engaging online shopping experiences and advance your career in a flexible, innovative environment. How to Apply: Please submit your resume, a brief cover letter, and links to any relevant portfolio or code (GitHub) showcasing your WordPress/WooCommerce projects.

We look forward to reviewing your application!
