Your opportunity:

The Temerty Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM) is an interdepartmental centre, situated within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP), and serves as a focal point for collaboration to advance AI in medicine. This role will also collaborate closely with MedIT, which provides information technology support for the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, to facilitate a shared development environment.

As a Software Engineer, you will support the deployment of Health Data Nexus, the flagship data platform provided by T-CAIREM. Health Data Nexus provides secure access to healthcare data to researchers locally and globally. Hospitals publish data on the platform, and researchers analyze this data to improve patient health. The open-source application facilitates secure access to restricted datasets for research and is built on the Django framework in Python. Key responsibilities of this role includes both front-end and back-end development to improve the user experience and add additional features. Examples include building new interfacesto manage user identity, creating views which interface with cloud computing services, and improving the data publishing workflow. The direction of development will be decided collaboratively, and this is an excellent position to grow skills around software design. The development team is small allowing ownership over significant aspects of platform development as well as rapid iteration and deployment of new features.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing a web platform based in Python (Django)
  • Working independently and as part of a team to architect, develop, test, review, and deploy complex software applications
  • Meeting with researchers to understand needs, user-stories, and requirements.
  • Participating in team-based development practices such as code reviews and testing.
  • Reconciling business requirements with information architecture needs for highly complex system integration
  • Analyzing,troubleshooting and testing highly complex systems
Essential Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor\'s degree in, Software Engineering, Computer Science and/or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education.
  • Minimum five (5) years in programming and systems development and design, including requirements analysis, system modeling, and database diagramming
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of Python
  • Experience with Object-Relational Mapping libraries
  • Experience with Django
  • Proficiency using Git to manage code versioning
  • Experience using Docker and Docker-compose, or similar container tooling.
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform or other cloud services.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, CirclCI, Github Actions) and monitoring tools (Sentry, Google Analytics, Matomo).
  • Willingness to learn new technologies andproactively lead development.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Strong proficiency using Python; proficiency using Django or other Python web frameworks
  • Strong proficiency using SQL, relational databases (Postgres) and object relational mapping (ORM)
  • Proficiency using HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Proficiency using Linux
  • Proficiency using Git and GitHub
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Must be self-motivated, results oriented, a quick learner with a strong customer service focus and impeccable attention to detail
  • Must have superior organizational and analytical/diagnostic skills
