To support new talent entering the sector we facilitate a summer internship program for students from across Canada.




What is the COVE Internship Program?





We are looking for bright, talented individuals at the post-secondary level, interested in the marine sector, who are looking to gain valuable, hands-on work experience. You will be placed with a host company in the marine sector and will be working on a core project for their business. Projects are interdisciplinary and students will be collaborating closely with other students and staff from different disciplines.





The COVE internship is a collaboration with numerous companies that are leaders in the marine and marine technology sector. We are diligent in placing students in a role with a company that is well aligned with their discipline of study, skill set, and future career ambitions. Canada's marine sector is growing and thriving and contributes millions of dollars to our national economy on an annual basis. COVE is seeking interns who are Canada's best and brightest to be part of this phenomenal growth.





Internship Eligibility:



o This role is primarily for students in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields. Students from other disciplines may apply but must have relevant experience in software development. Students must be actively enrolled in a post-secondary program at the time of the summer internship.



o Based on the required skillsets, placements are typically geared towards second-year undergraduate students and above.



o Collaborative Self-starter



o Open to learning


o Have experience or an interest in the marine sector


o International students must be eligible to work in Canada and have a valid study/work permit.



o Experience with Javascript, SQL, and Python are considered assets.

The Opportunity:





Digital Harbour is a cutting-edge initiative at COVE focused on the development of a common set of physical and digital infrastructure to facilitate research, commercialization, and innovation. The vision of Digital Harbour is a harbour maximizing collaboration. The intern will support Digital Harbour platform testing, feature integration and software development to enhance the platforms capabilities. This role is ideal for a Computer Science student interested in applying their technical skills to real-world challenges in the marine sector.




What you will be doing:





The student will report to the Technical Project Manager. Duties for this position will include:


Testing and debugging Digital Harbour platform features.

Integrating new functionalities and ensuring interoperability within the platform.

Developing and optimizing software components to improve system performance.

Collaborating with industry partners to refine platform usability and address technical challenges.

Documenting testing processes, findings, and recommendations for system improvements.




At the end of the internship, the student will be expected to:


Have completed comprehensive feature testing and integration for at least one platform enhancement.

Have contributed to software development and debugging efforts that improve platform functionality.

Have documented and reported key findings on system performance, bugs, and improvement opportunities.

Have played a meaningful role in supporting Digital Harbour's technical projects and industry collaborations.




Students will gain the following from working with COVE:

Exposure to marine technology, data science, and AI-driven applications.

Development of verbal and written communication skills through documentation and collaboration.

Strengthened time management and project execution skills.

Practical knowledge of software deployment and maintenance in a live environment.
