The Lax Kw'alaams Band has an exciting and immediate opening for a full-time family Social Worker in our community. This position is responsible for advocating for the Band's children by providing family and child support to members to create a healthy community to raise children. In collaboration with the Northwest Inter-Nation Family and Community Services (NIFCS) and Ministry of Child and Family Services (MCFD), you will provide services in support of the Lax Kw'alaams Band members and duties may be provided to you from time to time by management. Duties performed include, not limited to:
Responsibilities:
General
Liaison between the Ministry of Children and Families NIFCS to create and implement a family safety plan for children within the community.
Responsible for coordination, reporting and supervision of C92 program and staff.
Responsible for the development of First Nations Child and Family Services unit on reserve.
Coordinate family meetings to address family safety planning and strategies to keep children within the community.
Respond to emergency family care needs within the community. Identify and recommend members within the community who can safely care for children in emergency situations.
Attend court with the families and act as court support and Band representative, when required.
Assist families who are not eligible for the social workers' program to overcome difficulties, such as family splits and custody disagreements.
Assist families in completing child support related paperwork, including custody applications and court paperwork.
Build and maintain relationships with community service programs.
Record case notes, maintain confidential client records, and prepare corresponding reports.
Provide support to the members and internal and external agencies in addressing and resolving child-rearing issues, such as child abuse, misbehaviour, or drug and alcohol abuse.
Act as an advocate for the children, ensuring that they are raised in a safe and healthy environment.
Serve as a liaison between the children and internal and external agencies to ensure that they receive the necessary resources and help to address their problems.
Counsel with the children's parents, teachers and others to assess problems, implement solutions, and follow-up on action items.
Develop and maintain partnerships and workshops with organizations and resources such as Legal Aid, local non-profits, housing advocates, and mental health providers to provide holistic support services that benefit and strengthen families, promote stability, and encourage family wellness.
Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
: Education
Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. Must hold a RSW or RCSW designation.
Experience
Minimum of 2-years' experience working with Indigenous families and communities, preferably in a social services, education, or wellness setting.
Ability to support and advocate for culturally safe planning, ensuring children remain connected to their family, culture, and community.
Participate in Family Case Conferences (FCCs) and Family Case Planning Conferences (FCPCs), ensuring cultural continuity and advocating for the inclusion of extended family and community in planning.
Excellent understanding and knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and socio-economic issues affecting urban indigenous families.
Ability to work effectively with agency staff, volunteers and professionals from community agencies and partner organizations.
Experience within the court environment considered an asset.
Competencies
Knowledge of the Ministry of Child and Family Development is an asset.
Excellent oral, written, facilitation, interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
Patient and calm, especially when handling children or parent concerns or conflict.
Basic first aid training or willingness to complete.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Must be able to remain seated for extended periods while using a computer or phone.
Occasionally attend court, or other meetings.
Maintain patience and composure during stressful or emotionally charged situations.
Handle unexpected issues such as child and/or parent concerns, or last-minute changes.
