TSARTLIP FIRST NATION

SOCIAL WORKER

PROGRAM

The Community Services Department, in collaboration with the Tsartlip First Nation and broader community, is responsible for increasing the capacity and sustainability of the department and enhance engagement and ownership of the health of the W?SANE? peoples. The department develops and implements health programs that incorporate the traditions, values and strengths of the W?SANE? peoples.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Social Worker (SW) plays a pivotal role in delivering culturally safe, trauma-informed, and client-centered care to Tsartlip First Nation members. Working within a collaborative, team-based First Nations community health setting, the SW provides psychosocial support, advocacy, and coordination of health-related and social services to individuals and families. Guided by the Nation's commitment to holistic wellness, cultural integrity, and healing, the SW helps address the social determinants of health through strong relationships, clear planning, and system navigation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The SW operates under the direct supervision of the Director of Community Services (Director)

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

The SW does not supervise employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

oConduct comprehensive client assessments that incorporate emotional, social, cultural, and environmental needs;

oDevelop individualized treatment and care plans in collaboration with clients and multidisciplinary teams;

oDeliver trauma-informed counselling, crisis intervention, and short- and long-term support to clients and families;

oSupport the continuity of care by providing referrals, coordinating external supports, and helping clients access services;

oCoordinate with internal health team and external partners to ensure integrated care and service delivery;

Facilitate culturally relevant programming, workshops, and healing initiatives that align with community needs;

oAssist with hospital discharge planning, transitions in care, and case conferencing if required;

oEnsure all interactions are grounded in cultural humility, respect, and the recognition of Indigenous ways of knowing;

oIncorporate cultural teachings and practices into care planning and wellness supports;

oPromote a safe and respectful environment for all community members, free from judgement or stigma;

oDevelop trusting relationships over time and uphold Tsartlip's values of dignity, inclusion, and intergenerational respect;

oMaintain accurate, timely, and confidential records consistent with Tsartlip guidelines;

oContribute to internal reports, case updates, and evaluations of client outcomes;

oParticipate in quality assurance initiatives and contribute to improvements in service delivery;

oAttends relevant training and workshops identified by the Director to enhance program services;

oMonitors areas of responsibility for opportunities for improvement and innovation and works proactively to implement these;

oAttends departmental and staff meetings and events as required;

oAdheres to departmental policies and procedures, and all other policies, bylaws and laws adopted by Council as well as legislated policies;

oEnsures that service quality standards are maintained and consistently delivered in all areas of responsibility;

oMaintains strict confidentiality and exercises sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues;

oPresents a professional, positive and helpful attitude at all times when interacting with clients, families, community and co-workers;

oPromotes a safe work place; ensures that all established safety procedures are followed;

oCarries out other duties essential to the position as directed by the Director.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The SW does not have financial responsibility.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

oHonours Bachelor of Social Work (HBSW) or degree in a related field;

oMinimum 5 years of experience in social work, with 2 years working directly with First Nations communities preferred.

oExperience maintaining records, filing and correspondence;

oKnowledge of W?SANE? values, traditions, and cultural protocols considered a strong asset;

oDemonstrated experience supporting individuals and families impacted by trauma, mental health challenges, or systemic barriers;

oValid Class 5 Driver's License and access to reliable transportation;

oClear criminal record check (vulnerable sector);

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

oCommitment to cultural safety and decolonizing social work practice;

oExperience navigating complex systems (e.g. MCFD, hospitals, community services);

oDemonstrated conflict resolution and crisis intervention ability;

oAbility to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team;

oComfortable with electronic records and Microsoft Office Suite;

oAdvanced organizational skills with a very high attention to detail,

oAbility to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals

Ability to work independently with limited direction, act on own initiative, set own priorities and meet deadlines;

oAbility to maintain strict confidentiality and to exercise sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues;

oAbility to deal effectively, and efficiently with occasionally assertive individuals to provide or obtain information to clarify or resolve issues;

oStrong work ethic including the ability to take initiative; to attend work on a regular and consistent basis, and to demonstrate a collaborative approach to problem solving.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands

oExtended periods of desk work and using a computer and other office equipment;

oLifting (approximately 25 lbs); bending or stooping;

oPotential for conflict from employees, the public or Nation members;

oMay be required to attend meetings and community events outside of normal office hours. May be required to travel out of town to attend activities such as meetings, conferences, or workshops.
