Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. Our successes and accomplishments are driven by embodying and upholding values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness and relevance.

Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Your role CBC North is seeking a full-time social media presenter to take the helm of our news strategy on social media, with an emphasis on video. Working with a talented team of journalists and programmers, you will help guide a social media strategy that places a strong emphasis on understanding and engaging younger, diverse audiences. You will play a key public-facing role creating meaningful connections with the audience through CBC North\xe2\x80\x99s social media feeds, on-platform comments and other digital platforms. You will mine those connections for story ideas to inform and contribute to our journalism. You are up-to-date on cultural moments and trends. You are a strong believer in the role of the CBC as Canada\xe2\x80\x99s public broadcaster, possess a key understanding of our mandate to serve Canadians and bring your own unique take on how to achieve it. You think audience-first. You have a deep understanding of video production with an emphasis on digital and social storytelling. You think outside the box, have a clear vision and are able to work collaboratively with other teams in the newsroom to bring that vision to life, creating content that engages the audience and builds loyalty. You are a self-starter and team player who thrives under deadline pressure and excels at pitching original content and innovative story treatments. Working with a senior video producer, you will own and execute the social media calendar including content development, best practices, video production, monitoring analytics and reporting. Your work will be governed by and adhere to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Advice and guidance are available but initiative and independent judgment are expected. More specific duties are as follows:

  • Play an active role in strategy and planning for CBC North\xe2\x80\x99s current (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) and future social media presence, in conjunction with the goals of CBC North and the CBC more broadly. This includes consideration on how to incorporate Indigenous languages into CBC North\xe2\x80\x99s social media offering.
  • Monitor and program CBC North\xe2\x80\x99s social media accounts daily, working to provide our multiplatform content to our digital audience. Respond to audience concerns and queries.
  • In collaboration with CBC North\xe2\x80\x99s digital, video, and audio teams, create content aimed specifically at a digital audience. This could include writing and packaging stories for our website, creating and editing video, or audio initiatives.
  • Curate digital communities - both current, such as CBC North\xe2\x80\x99s popular Facebook groups, and through the creation of new offerings - and work to reflect our digital audience meaningfully on our video, audio, and web platforms.
  • Pitch stories and projects focused on audience engagement and connection through social media. This could entail traveling to communities across the North.
  • Respond to and engage with our digital audience. This could include tasks such as live blogging and public moderation of live online social media exchanges.
  • Bring personality into the role; both in talking with the audience on the ground, and presenting information on air.
  • Solicit, co-ordinate and verify local user generated content on behalf of the newsroom. Contribute and pitch ideas or program content; participate in the preparation of program objectives for both local and national social pages.
  • Program social media for off-hours.
  • Manage social accounts for the region, with assistance from local newsrooms.
  • Liaise with other staff to ensure required material is available.
  • Publish CBC material on social media and other platforms.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • Knowledge of news presentation on social platforms, including emerging social platforms and trends, with a passion for learning new tools and journalism forms and an interest in shaping them for the future
  • Extensive video production and editing experience, with an emphasis on digital video.
  • A deep knowledge of the North and its communities, extensive knowledge of the digital audience of the North and ideas on how to meaningfully engage them.
  • Expertise in how to best use video, photos, text and other tools to enhance digital treatments; an aptitude for graphic design is a bonus.
  • Deep understanding of social analytics and ability to direct social media efforts in response to metrics.
  • Ability to navigate challenging conversations and trolling.
  • An ability to spearhead change as a newsroom leader when it comes to digital video, and support CBC staff with their understanding of the importance of social media.
  • Proven track record of community engagement and relationship-building. You are tapped into communities in Canada\xe2\x80\x99s North and want to give them a voice.
  • Distinctive life experience, perspective or expertise that will enrich the newsroom and our storytelling.
  • Understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives, opinions and experiences in an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Good communicator, team player, and open to feedback.
  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Three to four years of relevant experience that includes proven knowledge of digital news media and social media distribution.
