Description

Avalanche Technicians work to effect avalanche mitigations in accordance with the avalanche safety plan within the scope of their training, certifications, and abilities. The role communicates information, maintains equipment, and performs additional tasks in the Ski Patrol and larger public safety environment. Avalanche Technicians report to the Snow Safety Supervisor/Lead Forecaster and the Senior Supervisor of Public Safety. Avalanche Technicians work alongside other Technicians, Duty Forecasters, and the Ski Patrol team members along with all other Mountain Operations staff.

Essential Functions

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide, within the ski area's avalanche safety plan, comprehensive avalanche control when required, including opening terrain in a timely fashion, and completing all daily duties pertaining to safety. Collecting pertinent data including weather, snowpack, and avalanche observations. Providing first aid and participating in lift evacuations, when required. Communicating changing weather, closures, and atypical operating conditions. Maintaining avalanche signage.

Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities

Timely completion of documentation of avalanche data- weather and downed avalanche observations and explosives use. Assist with maintenance of all equipment that pertains to the avalanche control program. Timely and accurate reporting of documentation, and all incidents and deficiencies to appropriate departments/personnel. Other duties may be requested and assigned from time to time.

Experience and Qualifications

CAA Operations Level 1 certificate. Must have several years of experience skiing and patrolling and working in high stress situations. 80-hour Advanced First Aid Certificate, or higher. Valid AB Non-Mining Avalanche Control Blasting certificate. Excellent customer service skills, especially in high stress environments such as accident scenes. Effectively provide training, support, and assistance to coworkers. Maintain professional conduct when knowingly acting as a company representative, on or off-duty. Must be neat, alert, punctual and dependable, acting as a leader and mentor. Prepared to work flexible schedules e.g., weekends, holidays, nights, extended hours. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel) and online InFoEx system is desired. Valid Alberta motor vehicle operator's license. Able to operate UTV, highway vehicle, snowmobile.

Additional Considerations

Employees must always be of sound mind and report to work fit for duty. The ability to exercise good judgement is essential and a key requirement of the position. This position requires the ability to ski for long periods of time (spending the day in ski boots is normal), constant trunk rotation, frequent lifting, pushing/pulling of equipment, patients, and tools (up to 45 kg). Requires working at heights, occasionally climbing ladders, travelling on steep slopes and extreme terrain. There will be exposure to extreme environments (temperature and wind) and remote work. This role may operate machinery and works around moving equipment. Candidates are required to provide Vibram soled winter boots; ski equipment in good working order; avalanche safety gear (3 antennae beacon, shovel, and probe); an ASTM helmet; and appropriate mid and base layers for a winter environment. Outer uniform pieces (liner, jacket, pants, toque) are provided. This position requires the ability to work around and travel in helicopters to perform certain tasks.
