Job Description




POSITION SUMMARY: After progression to "Skilled", and under the general supervision of the Supervisor \xe2\x80\x93 Contract Project Services and the technical direction and guidance of the Lead Operator, performs construction, repair and replacement of storm and sanitary sewer systems and water distribution subsystems.

MAJOR TASKS: * Performs construction, repair and replacement work on the water distribution system, including services, mains, valves, hydrants, and other related fixtures.

  • Performs construction, repair and replacement work on the storm and sanitary sewer systems, including house connections, manholes, catch basins, mains, and related fixtures.
  • Operates jackhammers, rock drills, power driven saws, pumps, steamers, and other work-related equipment.
  • Operates trucks up to a "DZ" level.
  • Fills out time cards, water and sewer reports and forms. Marks in proper account distribution.
  • Reports materials used as required.
  • Reports equipment and material defects as required.
  • Performs stand-by duties as required.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent as per the Ministry of the Environment certification guidelines
  • Must possess a valid passing grade on the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator in Training exam.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Must be able to understand water distribution and wastewater collection maps and construction drawings
  • Must have mechanical aptitude
  • Must be capable of reporting (written and verbal) on sewer and water systems conditions or problems
  • Must be capable of issuing and accurately comprehending written/oral information and instructions
  • Must be tactful and courteous with the public
  • Must be reliable and capable of performing routine work with a minimum of supervision
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class \xe2\x80\x9cD\xe2\x80\x9d Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent with a \xe2\x80\x98Z\xe2\x80\x99 endorsement
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver\xe2\x80\x99s record (uncertified)
  • Within 1 year of hire, must attain and maintain Operator in Training certification in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection
  • Must obtain a Class I Operator Certificate in Water Distribution Subsystems and a Class I Waste Water Operator Licence for Waste Water Collection Facilities to progress to skilled rate
  • Within 3 years of hire, must complete mandatory entry level drinking water operator course for operators in training
  • Within 5 years of hire, must possess and maintain a Class I Waste Water Operator Certificate in Water Distribution Subsystems and a Class I Waste Water Operator Licence for Waste Water Collection Facilities
  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and with sewage
  • Must be physically capable to perform the duties of the job
  • Must work weekends and shifts as required
