The opportunity:
Under the general direction of the Business Manager, Clinical Learning & Simulation Program (CLSP), the Simulation Technician is responsible for supporting all technical and operational aspects of the CLSP within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. This role involves preparing, maintaining, and repairing simulation equipment, task trainers, virtual reality systems, and related peripherals, as well as setting up and cleaning simulation rooms, lab stations, and equipment to ensure a seamless learning environment for faculty and students.
The Simulation Technician operates and troubleshoots high-fidelity patient simulators, task trainers, and virtual reality systems, ensuring that sessions run smoothly and meet the required learning objectives. The incumbent provides technical and operational support during teaching sessions, including operating medical devices, assisting faculty in running scenarios, and ensuring that all AV and IT systems function properly for recording, streaming, and debriefing. They are responsible for the configuration and maintenance of cameras, audio-visual systems, and simulation software, performing initial troubleshooting and coordinating with IT or vendors for complex issues.
In addition to equipment operation, the Simulation Technician monitors supply levels and maintains organized and well-stocked storage areas. They follow strict safety protocols when handling biological specimens and ensure compliance with lab policies. Routine cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs of equipment are performed regularly, with careful documentation of procedures and preventative maintenance activities.
The incumbent offers guidance to users on proper equipment operation and contributes to process improvements by documenting setup procedures and recommending enhancements for future sessions.
The hours for this position are typically 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm weekdays and weekends 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, with variable start and end times to meet program requirements.
The qualifications and experience we're looking for:
Completion of certificate program in a related health or technical field (i.e. Unit Clerk, Nursing Assistant, A/V Technician, etc.)
One year experience in a Clinical Simulation environment
OR
Two years' experience in a clinical healthcare setting (e.g. Nursing Assistant, Health Unit Assistant, Emergency Medical Responder, etc.)
OR
Two years' experience in a related technical setting from which comparable skills can be acquired (e.g. Audio-Visual, Information Technology)
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Strong technical background and ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot equipment (AV, IT, and Simulation Technology) is required
Proficiency with Windows, OSX and digital AV editing software is required
Ability to learn new technologies is required
Must demonstrate initiative, independence, reliability, attention to detail, and good judgment is required
Ability to communicate with diverse groups including faculty, staff, students, and the public is required
Ability to organize and maintain accurate records and to make decisions quickly and effectively is required
Ability to use tools and equipment as required
Must be able to lift and push up to 50 lbs is required
Must be capable of walking 5 km per day is required
A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required
Knowledge of medical terminology and human physiology is an asset
