The City of Edmonton's Traffic Operations section, within Parks and Roads Services, is seeking dedicated Sign Shop Workers to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the visual landscape of our city by designing, manufacturing, and installing a wide variety of traffic control signs and decals. You will be an integral part of a team that ensures public safety and effective traffic management across Edmonton's road network.
As a Sign Shop Worker, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of sign production, from initial design to final installation. This involves determining material and equipment needs, utilizing various computer software programs for graphic and text design, and operating both automated and manual manufacturing equipment. You will play a key role in ensuring all signage meets applicable standards, policies, and procedures, collaborating with leaders and clients to achieve project goals. This position is vital to maintaining safe and efficient traffic flow within the city.
What will you do?
Design and manufacture a wide variety of signs and decals for the City of Edmonton, taking projects from start to finish using multiple manufacturing methods with both automated and manual equipment
Determine the material and equipment required to manufacture signs
Design and layout text and graphics for custom sign requests using various computer software programs, ensuring high-quality products
Ensure signage meets any applicable standard, policy, or procedure required
Work with leaders and/or clients to ensure the needs of stakeholders are achieved
Export digital designs to vinyl printers, cutters, or plotters
Calibrate equipment, including color proofing and media selection, to ensure quality products
Laminate digital prints and prepare vinyl sheeting for masking
Prepare suitable substrates and apply sheeting by hand or mechanical laminator for digital printing and vinyl cutting processes
Apply decals in the field on various surfaces
Operate hand tools such as drills, wrenches, hammers, etc., and sign manufacturing and installation equipment
Set up and tear down work sites
Prepare all required vehicles, supplies, materials, equipment, and tools, including safety and protective equipment, for assigned work
Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot screens and equipment
Adhere to standard operating procedures and essential safety measures, including participating in Safety and Environmental Programs and tailgate/safety meetings
Perform hazard assessments and ensure the work site is safe

Qualifications
:High School Diploma with coursework in graphics
Minimum of 3 years experience in the design and manufacturing of signs and decals
Assets:
Extensive knowledge of computer graphics hardware and software used in the design and production of sign masters
Knowledge of various methods and techniques, tools, and materials used in the fabrication and production of high-quality signs
Ability to utilize photographic equipment and associated stencilling techniques in sign fabrication
Skills required for success:
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
Ability to work independently and/or as a member of a production team
Ability to manually lift moderate to heavy materials and tools and to stand during the course of producing signs in the shop for the majority of the shift
Skilled in the use of presses, manual and automated film-cutting, silk-screening, and a wide variety of hand and power tools
Strong problem-solving skills to quickly identify problems and find effective solutions, especially with constantly changing priorities and tight timelines
Understanding the needs of various stakeholders and projects and coordinating requests to align with operational programs, standards, policies, and procedures
Knowledge of Collective Agreements and OH&S Legislation
Knowledge of City of Edmonton policies, bylaws, and directives
Knowledge of Transportation Association of Canada Highway Design Guide and Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices

The successful candidate will be required to perform light to heavy physical effort, including sitting, kneeling, standing/walking, manual dexterity, climbing stairs, visual acuity/colour vision, lifting up to 20 lbs, climbing ladders, balancing, crouching, depth perception/night vision, pulling, pushing, reaching, and use of feet for controls
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
This role operates within the dynamic environment of Traffic Field Operations, which manufactures, installs, and maintains all traffic control signs and pavement markings. The work is physically demanding during peak seasons and involves exposure to various environmental conditions and hazards. You will work closely with a team, receiving guidance from the Sign Shop Leader, but also exercising independence in organizing daily tasks
