Sidewalk Smarts Instructor

The

Sidewalk Smarts Instructor

is responsible for delivering pedestrian skills training to grade 3-4 students in select Waterloo region schools during the school day. This program is delivered through Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region on behalf of a partnership with area municipalities and school boards.

Learning modules were developed in collaboration with area partners in children's road safety and have been adapted by Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region to evolve with student needs.

Nature & Scope:



Sessions will run from January-March 2026. The

Sidewalk Smarts Instructor

will be needed for part time hours during these weeks. The Sidewalk Smarts Instructor works with a team and will be responsible for delivering both in-class learning sessions and outdoor walking sessions at up to 11 schools during that period. The Sidewalk Smarts Instructor will work with the Sidewalk Smarts Lead Instructor.

Responsibilities:



Undergo training with Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region to learn instructional techniques and road safety curriculum. Work with a team and use specialist manuals and materials to deliver pedestrian skill training modules to grades 3-4 students during the school day and in a classroom setting. Use maps and wear PPE (traffic vest, whistle) to lead or support a small group (up to 15 students) for roadside training on streets near schools. Roadside sessions will be supported by 2 Sidewalk Smarts instructors per small group. Provide site support including set up of indoor instruction online program and handing out associated materials.

Qualifications:



Previous experience working with groups of children. Experience and appreciation of walking in urban environments. Champion of children's independent mobility and the right to walk to school. Ability to transport self to schools throughout Waterloo region. Current vulnerable sector screening from Waterloo Regional Police Services is a condition of employment. Minimum certifications in Standard First Aid with CPR C.
