Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and experienced

Shop Lead

to oversee production operations within a designated area of our Guelph facility. This role is responsible for the safe, timely, and cost-effective execution of production activities while leading, training, and supporting a team of manufacturing technicians to meet customer and quality expectations.

Key Responsibilities



Act as the senior manufacturing technician within the assigned production area Supervise, coordinate, schedule, and delegate work to technicians to meet production targets and timelines Maintain an effective work pace and ensure work orders are completed within established time standards Ensure efficient use of materials, labour, and equipment, including accurate labour scanning and work-order tracking Plan tooling, materials, and supply requirements in advance; communicate potential delivery risks or shortages to the Manufacturing Manager Arrange and manage overtime as required to meet production demands, with prior approval from the Manufacturing Manager; assign department call-out responsibilities Monitor staffing levels and recommend adjustments to meet operational requirements Train new employees, monitor progress, and prepare technicians for QA testing; coach technicians in manufacturing and troubleshooting techniques and ensure cross-training within the department Conduct performance evaluations and support disciplinary actions in collaboration with the Operations Manager Identify and resolve production issues; recommend improvements to workflow, work practices, equipment layout, and material handling to improve efficiency and productivity Ensure proper use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, report maintenance needs to the Manufacturing Manager

Quality Assurance Responsibilities



Perform 3rd Party QA First-Off inspections and High-Value inspections as required Act as Final Quality Inspector for the assigned area Ensure all completed work orders and products are fully QA inspected prior to release to the warehouse Verify compliance with raw material documentation requirements, including PO numbers and MTR/Heat number traceability from warehouse to shop floor

Health & Safety Responsibilities



Ensure all work is performed in accordance with A.R. Thomson Engineered Solutions' Health & Safety Policies, Procedures, Safe Work Practices, and applicable OH&S legislation Ensure employees are properly trained in safety procedures and the correct use, care, and storage of personal protective equipment (PPE) Proactively identify and communicate potential hazards related to job tasks Arrange medical treatment and transportation as required Immediately report all accidents, incidents, near misses, and health concerns to senior management Lead accident investigations within the area of responsibility in collaboration with the Safety Officer and Health & Safety Committee Conduct or delegate regular safety inspections to ensure PPE compliance and safe work practices May serve as a member of the Health & Safety Committee

Qualifications & Skills



Previous experience in a manufacturing or production environment Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience preferred Strong knowledge of shop safety standards, quality systems, and manufacturing processes Ability to train, mentor, and motivate a team Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
