Overview



Ballance Containers is seeking a hands-on

Shop Foreman

to lead daily operations in our fabrication shop. This role is central to ensuring the right people are assigned to the right jobs, projects are completed within budgeted labor hours, and quality standards are consistently achieved. The Shop Foreman is the on-site leader who drives accountability, enforces schedules, and liaises with the Production Manager and Project Managers to align shop output with project delivery. While the core focus is on fabrication and retrofitting within the shop, the role also supports preparation for off-site installations when required.

Key Responsibilities



Leadership & People Management



Supervise, lead, and mentor shop staff, subcontractors, and trades. Assign people to jobs based on skills, availability, and project requirements. Manage workforce time, monitor labor efficiency, and adjust assignments to keep projects on schedule. Promote teamwork, resolve day-to-day personnel issues, and maintain morale. Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of shop staff and subcontractors. Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and pride in workmanship.

Operations & Project Coordination



Oversee fabrication, retrofitting, and finishing work in the shop. Liaise with the Production Manager and Project Managers to ensure shop work is delivered on time, within budgeted labor, and at required quality standards. Ensure crews have instructions, drawings, and expectations for each assignment. Support coordination of trades and logistics for occasional off-site installations. Troubleshoot issues on the floor and escalate risks before they impact project delivery.

Quality Control & Standards



Enforce Ballance's quality standards across all shop activities. Conduct ongoing quality checks to ensure workmanship meets expectations. Provide coaching and corrective direction where necessary.

Workforce Time Management



Track and manage labor hours for shop staff and subcontractors. Monitor productivity, identify inefficiencies, and adjust assignments to optimize workforce utilization. Provide input on staffing needs, overtime requirements, and scheduling.

Logistics, Materials & Equipment



Manage preparation and staging of containers, tools, and materials for shop projects. Track inventory and flag shortages or procurement needs. Ensure proper use, maintenance, and availability of tools and equipment. Oversee inbound and outbound shipments to align with project schedules.

Administration & Reporting



Maintain daily logs of work assignments, hours, productivity, and issues encountered. Provide feedback to the Production Manager and Project Managers on crew performance, scheduling, and resource planning. Support cost control by monitoring labor efficiency and material usage. Participate in weekly planning meetings to align shop and project needs.

Qualifications & Skills



5+ years of supervisory experience in construction, fabrication, or a related field. Strong leadership and people management skills, with proven experience managing trades or shop crews. Skilled at workforce assignment and labor tracking. Ability to enforce quality standards and hold teams accountable. Excellent communication and organizational abilities. Experience managing both staff and subcontractors. Strong knowledge of fabrication, construction, and OHSA safety standards. Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and work orders.
Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30.00-$40.00 per hour
