Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-focused Shipper to manage and execute complex shipping operations within a busy lumber retail and distribution environment. The successful candidate will have proven expertise in material handling, documentation, and logistics coordination, with specialized knowledge of lumber grades and dimensional products. This position requires a detail-oriented professional capable of operating efficiently in a fast-paced, physically demanding workplace while maintaining the highest standards of safety and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and monitor all outgoing shipments of lumber, plywood, and building materials to retail and contractor customers.
- Verify product grades, dimensions, and quantities to ensure accuracy of packing slips, invoices, and bills of lading.
- Operate forklifts and other material-handling equipment to safely load and unload trucks, ensuring compliance with WorkSafeBC safety regulations.
- Coordinate delivery schedules with carriers, freight companies, and customers to meet strict shipping timelines.
- Prepare and maintain all shipping documentation, including freight manifests, customs/export papers, and inventory records.
- Conduct quality checks to ensure products are properly packaged, secured, and compliant with transportation standards.
- Maintain accurate digital and paper shipping logs, assisting with periodic audits and inventory reconciliations.
- Supervise and mentor yard assistants or junior staff in safe handling and loading practices.
Qualifications and Experience
- Strong command of the English language
- Minimum 3-5 years of shipping or logistics experience, preferably in a lumber, building materials, or industrial supply environment.
- Valid Forklift Operator Certification -- mandatory.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or equivalent) -- required.
-Proven ability to safely lift, move, and handle materials weighing up to 100 lbs (45 kg) on a regular basis.
- Strong knowledge of lumber grades and building products
- Familiarity with inventory control systems and digital shipping documentation software.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in both indoor and outdoor conditions year-round.
Education
Secondary school completion required.
Post-secondary training in logistics, business, supply chain, production or manufacturing management
Additional credentials in inventory control, shipping/receiving operations, or WHMIS/TDG are advantageous.
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $36.60 per hour
Expected hours: 30 - 40 per week
