Job Summary
The Shift Supervisor performs as team leader in providing the best aquatic recreational service to the community. The Shift Supervisor is an enthusiastic, highly motivated and energetic leader with a strong work ethic. Under the direction of the Head Guard, the Shift Supervisor provides general operational supervision of the entire natatorium (facility aquatic areas: pool basins, deck, change rooms, steam room, sauna, and viewing areas), monitors pool use to ensure that the daily operation is following UBC Aquatic Centre policies and safety standards and performs lifeguard and instructional duties. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for the on-deck shift operations and supervision of part time Lifeguard/Instructors.
In addition, the Shift Supervisor will provide leadership and assistance with the operation and delivery of aquatic and recreation programs, swim meets, and special events. The incumbent will provide direction and support to Lifeguard/Instructors, deal with difficult on and off deck situations and may provide administrative support in relation to staff scheduling and shift coverage. The Shift Supervisor is the \xe2\x80\x9cgo to\xe2\x80\x9d leader on the pool deck.
Shift work is required for this position, including mornings, evenings, and weekends.
Organizational Status
Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC tennis participant/client experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 130 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 60,000 students through recreational programming, 26 varsity teams, 17 competitive club teams, along with thousands of members of the UBC community.
Reports to the Head Guard under the direction of Program Manager, works with the UBC Aquatic Centre Administrative Staff, Interacts with all UBC Aquatic Centre staff.
Work Performed
Acts as the \xe2\x80\x9cair traffic controller\xe2\x80\x9d during their shift coordinating the deployment of staff.
Carries-out opening and closing procedures / tasks as required (lead staff person: first to arrive / last to leave).
Supervises Lifeguard/Instructors on their designated shift.
Supervises swimming, recreational and fitness activities and enforces safety regulations in the aquatic facilities.
Mentors and assists with staff development, lesson support, and in-service training.
Performs lifeguarding and instructional duties.
Provides administrative staff scheduling and shift coverage support as required.
Coordinates rescues of distressed simmers and administers first aid, artificial respiration and other approved safety measures when necessary; assists in the organizing speedy and safety removal of injured patrons.
Participates in the training and evaluation of subordinate aquatic staff and assists supervisors in ensuring that established standards of performance and safety for lifeguard, instructors and related aquatic staff are maintained.
Actively participates in swimming instruction.
Instructs all age groups in swimming techniques for all levels of swimming from Preschool to Lifesaving Society levels, including instruction in special areas such as challenged adults, children, fitness, diving, etc.
Performs as a professional and dedicated team player in providing the best aquatic experience to the community.
Updates / maintains related records / documentation.
Acts as Operators Desk Cashier Attendant in absence of Cashier, assists and support during swim lesson registration, and/or other peak demand times.
Assists in ensuring that general maintenance duties such as: filtration system, chlorine systems, pool chemistry and building cleanliness are maintained.
Answers inquiries and handles complaints from participants regarding facility operations, program schedules / content, and lesson instruction and/or lifeguarding methods of staff. Escalates as required.
Performs miscellaneous duties and responsibilities as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Works under general supervision. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted practices involving freedom to select which methods are applicable to any given situation. Exercises some judgment in establishing priorities and carrying out task through to completion. Job tasks are generally standardized with ability to choose action within limits defined by information and procedures.
Supervision Received
Carries out familiar phases of work under general supervision. Receives detailed instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures. Work is evaluated by Head Guard and the Program Manager in terms of effectiveness of lifeguard, instruction, shift coordination, conforming to established practices and by the public in terms of services rendered.

Supervises swimming, recreational and fitness activities and enforces safety regulations in the aquatic facility. Supervises lifeguards and instructors on their designated shift. Participates in the training and evaluation of subordinate aquatic staff and assists supervisors in ensuring that established standards of performance and safety for lifeguard, instructors and related aquatic staff are maintained.
Minimum Qualifications
Grade 12 Education and Current National Lifeguard Service Award, Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, First Aid Certificate, CPR-C and AED Course. 2 years experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor. Demonstrated supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Current Lifesaving Swim Instructor (LSI)
Current Red Cross or Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid (SFA)
Current Red Cross of Lifesaving Society CPR-C/AED (Current within one year)
Current OFA1 (will be provided by facility after selection as Shift Supervisor)
Successful completion of UBC Aquatic Centre Supervisor Training
Current criminal record check (current within 2 years)
Working knowledge of the rules and regulations governing public safety in a swimming pool.
Considerable knowledge of swimming instruction techniques including specialized areas such as lifesaving, children\xe2\x80\x99s lessons advanced levels, etc.
Good knowledge of lifesaving methods and first aid techniques.
Ability to operate cash register, computer, and provide program and lesson information.
Ability to instruct all age groups in the learn to swim continuum.
Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with patrons.
Ability to maintain required records.
Skill in lifesaving, the application of first aid and in the application of swimming instruction to all age levels and group sizes.
Sufficient physical condition to ensure strength and stamina in the water.
Ability to supervise and mentor other Lifeguard/Instructors on a designated shift in the absence of other Supervisors.
