Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.


The Director, Access and Flow is currently seeking a Shift Nurse Manager (SNM). The purpose of the position is to act as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the hospital after regular business hours. SNM provides clinical and operational leadership in the absence of program and senior management. The SNM develops partnerships with and provides support to clinical programs to support the provision of safe, quality care.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:



Oversees the provision of services on shift and weekends, acting as officer-in-charge, managing hospital operations, responding to emergency situations and liaising with the administrator on call, police and community emergency responders. Provides a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for patients, staff and public by utilizing the appropriate balance of staff for the provision of patient care and security, managing the allocation of human resources, work assignments and monitoring workload on shift and weekends; assesses and manages risks/threats to the hospital, patients and staff to ensure safety and security. Provides direction and leadership to staff promoting best practices and acting as a resource and mentor. Promotes positive labour relations and effective conflict resolution, responds to complaints and grievances and disciplines staff within delegated authority, investigates, evaluates and reports on client complaints or incidents, identifying and resolving such issues. Maintains active partnerships with clinical programs, providing support to clinical leadership and program staff and participating in program meetings; advises managers of unusual and/or potentially serious situations. Responds with information and support to patients, families and community partners regarding services, admission criteria and crisis management, acting as a patient advocate regarding quality-of-life issues in a tertiary care and maximum secure setting; supporting staff during investigative procedures.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:



Current certificate of competence as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario is mandatory. Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred Minimum 3 to 5 years mental health nursing experience required, with prior leadership experience. Extensive psychiatric nursing experience, including excellent knowledge and application of team processes, collective agreements, security policies and procedures, professional standards, research activities and current best practices and approaches to treatment and rehabilitation of mental illness Extensive knowledge of the Mental Health Act and related statues Experience in forensic mental healthcare preferred Proven track record with assessing, implementing and evaluating effective delivery of patient/client care services and operational needs within an interdisciplinary environment Proven ability to act as a change agent to support hospital and program change initiatives Proven experience with hospital scheduling policies and practices Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills as well as analytical and critical thinking skills Highly effective verbal and written communication skills Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values, and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude. Preference for proficiency in French/English language
