Summary of Position
Shelter Service Workers (SSWs) provide support and service to Downtown Mission (DTM) Clients who present at DTM looking for shelter, food or other types of support. Service is provided in a timely manner with compassion, respect and patience for the Client and all others at the Mission. Service will be provided in accordance with procedures and abiding by rules and limits as set by the Director of Programs and Services.
They provide aid to Clients to deal with the challenges in their everyday lives which includes assisting people in crisis situations and following up with them to make sure that their situation has improved - many Clients present with multiple mental health and/or addiction issues.
Education
High School Diploma
Degree, Diploma or Certificate in a relevant Social Service Discipline or 1+ years of front-line service to vulnerable adults.
Knowledge and
Experience Required
Knowledge of vulnerable adults experiencing or at-risk of homelessness
Knowledge of concurrent mental health disorders and substance abuse
Knowledge of loss and separation, family crisis, poverty, disability, unemployment, resettlement, homelessness, mental health issues, addiction, abuse and other relevant topics in the Social Services Sector
Knowledge of Community Resources, what they offer and their availability to help those who might require their services
Skills and Qualities

Other Requirements
Must be over 18 years of age
Have access to reliable method of transportation
First Aid, CPR, Mental Health First Aid Certifications preferred
Knowledge of Naloxone and its function to reverse opioid toxicity preferred
Valid Driver's License with clean Driver's Abstract preferred
Experience with using Office 365 Suite preferred
Experience with HIFIS is an asset
