In this role, you will oversee the shelter team at The Mustard Seed Shelter Strathcona, ensuring that individuals in need have access to emergency shelter, daily meals, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other vital services. Collaborating with other Mustard Seed program areas and external agencies, you will fulfill our organization\'s mission and values, combating the root causes of poverty throughout Alberta and creating positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve.

The Mustard Seed provides basic services \xe2\x80\x93 food, clothing, and shelter, and is now increasing our support services \xe2\x80\x93 health & wellness centers, education, and employment coaching, as well as permanent supportive housing to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

  • Foster a positive and supportive team environment, leading by example in embodying our organization\'s values.
  • Provide strong leadership to the shelter team, overseeing daily tasks and responsibilities of support staff, while inspiring trust and cooperation among team members.
  • Recognize the significance of building trusted relationships with the community members accessing our programs and services. Emphasize the importance of empathetic and respectful interactions with our guests.
  • Ensure that the shelter team maintains an enhanced visible presence across the property to optimize safety and create a sense of community among our guests.
  • Prioritize and provide effective solutions to staff concerns and guest issues, fostering a harmonious and supportive environment.
  • Ensure that clients\' records and information are kept confidential, updated, and secure, in compliance with organizational policies and regulations.
  • Provide spiritual oversight and support to the Shelter team, facilitating regular devotionals to promote staff well-being and resilience.
  • Develop and execute housing first programming that engages our guests, offering fellowship, hope, and opportunities for personal growth.
  • Offer regular feedback to team members, conduct monthly one-on-one meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and professional development opportunities.
  • Train, supervise, and schedule shelter team members, nurturing their growth and ensuring their adherence to organizational values and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Manager to create and implement innovative policies, procedures, schedules, reports, and budgets for the shelter\'s efficient functioning.
  • Liaise with the Health and Safety Analyst to implement and promote The Mustard Seed\'s Health and Safety policies to ensure a safe environment for all.
  • Cultivate positive and trusting relationships both within the organization and with external stakeholders to enhance community partnerships.
  • Facilitate and attend all mandatory meetings and activities to stay informed and engaged in the organization\'s growth and initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS
  • A Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field is preferred
  • 1-2 years of previous leadership experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in the homeless serving sector, highlighting your understanding of the complexities and challenges within this field.
  • We are seeking someone with a strong ability to be innovative and exemplify supportive leadership, fostering a positive and empowering work environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills are vital for effectively administering front-line activities and managing daily operations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to use required software is essential for efficient data management and communication.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary to convey information clearly and effectively to team members, guests, and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are crucial in building strong, trusting relationships with team members, guests, and partners.
  • A high degree of professionalism is expected, representing The Mustard Seed positively and maintaining a standard of excellence in all interactions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • The Shelter Supervisor may need to respond to critical incidents and administer lifesaving treatment, such as Naloxone, when necessary.
  • The position entails a blend of administrative responsibilities and relational work, requiring effective multitasking and communication skills.
  • The role may involve moderate to significant physical effort, including walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, and daily interactions with colleagues and guests.
  • The working environment is often fast-paced, demanding a moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem-solve effectively.
  • The position necessitates training in various areas, including two-way radio communications, MS Office-based computer programming, HMIS database system, FDARP, FOIP, First Aid, NVCI, and SafeTalk.
  • The Shelter Supervisor may be required to be available during evenings and weekends in case of emergency situations.
