Job Description

The

SHELTER SUPERVISOR,

in conjunction with the Shelter Manager, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward (HSHPE) including, but not limited to: animal care, staff supervision, overseeing volunteers and other shelter activities.

The Shelter Supervisor promotes the HSHPE mission and implements initiatives within the shelter and surrounding community. Develops and maintains relationships within the community, and with external animal welfare stakeholders, promotes public awareness of the HSHPE and its services. Maintain a positive, clean, safe and healthy environment for employees, volunteers, visitors and animals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Registered Veterinary Technician or related equivalent preferred.

Minimum one year of supervisory experience.

Minimum one year of workplace health & safety experience.

Demonstrated passion for animals and committed to helping others.

Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.

Energetic, team player who works well under pressure.

Ability to remain calm and professional in emotionally charged situations.

Able to work flexible working hours including evenings and weekends.

Working knowledge of Windows and MS Office is required.

WHMIS certification is required.

CPR / Emergency and Standard First Aid training is required.

Valid "G" Driver's License is required with a clean driving abstract.

Knowledge of Pet Point software an asset.

Volunteer management an asset.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES



SHELTER MANAGEMENT



In conjunction with the Shelter Manager:

Ensure all animals receive the appropriate care and treatment required and that protocols to prevent, and spread of, disease are adhered to at all times.

Assist with the care of the animals and overseeing staff care of the animals.

Ensure appropriate and timely veterinary services for all animals and working with local veterinary practitioners to obtain their assistance and services at the best price.

Develop and recommend new protocols and procedures to enhance animal welfare and adoptability.

Strive for timely communications regarding adoptions and other inquiries.

Control inventory to ensure adequate supplies are maintained and proper storage protocols for drugs are followed.

Perform building maintenance inspections.

Oversee the operations of the Animal Shelter, in the absence of the Shelter Manager.

All other duties as required.

HUMAN RESOURCES



Orient, train, motivate and supervise staff and volunteers to gain cooperation in meeting the goals and objectives of the HSHPE.

Adhere to employment and operational policies and procedures as established by the HSHPE.

Conduct employee disciplinary actions when required, following the Progressive Disciplinary Policy.

Adhere to the Ministry of Labour Laws and keeping up-to-date on the Employment Standards Act & Human Rights.

In conjunction with the Shelter Manager, conduct Animal Care Attendant evaluations and develop annual training plans.

All other duties as required.

HEALTH & SAFETY



Implementing health and safety practices to include, but not limited to:



Establish safe work practices while taking the necessary precautions to protect employees as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Maintain the organization's Health and Safety plan in accordance with provincial guidelines.

Provide training to all staff and volunteers on safe work practices, protective equipment, workplace hazards, reporting accidents and hazardous conditions, as well as training relating to animal care and welfare.

Ensure all hazardous materials, as designated by WHMIS, are properly marked, hazardous specification (Material Safety Data Sheets?) sheets are available to employees and that they are trained on how to safely use the material/chemical.

Investigate and report all incidents of injury that require medical aid and/or lost time to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and the Shelter Manager.

Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures with respect to animal care.

Develop and maintain Emergency Response Plan.

All other duties as required.

Job Type: Part-time
