Under the supervision of the Team Leader of Traditional Services, the Shakotihsnie:nenhs Traditional Support Counselor is responsible to provide support and counseling services to the clients of KSCS through a traditional approach for healing and wellness. The Shakotihsnie:nenhs Traditional Support Counselor is part of a team that provides services within the KSCS Continuum of Care while meeting the needs based on the Community Health Plan and KSCS Strategic Framework.

Schedule: 35 hrs/week; must be willing to work flexible hours as necessary

Responsibilities
Provide counseling services to clients:
Conduct screenings and assessments as needed.
Develop service plans with clients & Team Leader.
Participate in supervision sessions with supervisor.
Work with extended family in individual or group settings to provide/share information, discuss issues that impact on client/family.
Ensure outreach to family systems of clients.
Provide support (awareness, prevention sessions, traditional services) to clients as required (youth, parents, children, etc).
Bring an innovative, creative, holistic and cultural approach to service delivery by integrating traditional and conventional approaches to service delivery (present information on various methods to individual clients, coworkers, or groups).
Provide individual sweat lodge teachings to clients, fasting & purging & other ceremonies as per individual service plan.
Provide Haudenosaunee healing techniques and practices.
Provide Haudenosaunee teachings, knowledge & natural medicines/herbs based on client needs in order to aid in personal growth.
Promote & provide information to Tsi Niionkwarihotens (Our Ways)
Provide support services in various locations (home of client, Longhouse, etc).
Assist clients with appointments and court dates when deemed appropriate.
Assist in the implementation and planning of the Prevention and Support Services Team:
Prepare & write briefs, reports, case notes, evaluations and caseload summaries
Participate in Placement & Review as well as Case Conference meetings
Participate in training
Provide Team Leader & manager with information needed to develop programming & services
Participate in team meetings
Develop and maintain a resource network to meet the needs of community members (internal & external)
Collaborate and help design service plans in a team setting for individuals and families
Assist in promotion of and planning for Special Projects and Groups:
Assist in development of initiatives, proposals & budgets
Participate in other meetings as needed (inter-organizational committees)
Provide facilitation and planning of therapeutic, support or skill building groups
Provide information relevant to FWC and traditional services re: talk shows & articles etc.
Performs any other job-related duties as may be required by the immediate Supervisor.

+ This may be a skill needed on occasion in terms of working with stakeholders, participants, supervisors and/or coworkers. However, it isn't a major role within this job description. Training:
+ Must be versed in traditional Iroquois teachings & committed to helping the clients within this framework.
+ Continual training is needed to stay on top of the trends in the field, to become aware of issues that may affect the clients/participants.
+ Participation in KSCS training is mandatory and based on emerging needs and Performance Appraisals. Adherence to the Training Request procedure is needed for tracking purposes.

Qualifications

Education and experience:
Bachelor's in Social Work (BSW) with one (1) year related experience.
Certificate/D.E.C. in Social Work or related field with two (2) years related experience.
Minimum of High School with five (5) years related work experience and/or training may be considered.

Skills and requirements:
Strong knowledge of the Kahnawake community
Strong knowledge of programs and services offered through KSCS
Must have knowledge of Haudenosaunee traditions and ceremonies
Ability to organize projects using Haudenosaunee approaches and teachings
Ability to teach Haudenosaunee ceremonies and traditions
Strong problem-solving skills, mediation, communication and conflict resolution skills
Strong motivation skills, self- starter with creative and innovative ideas
Ability to promote the program objectives
Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
Ability to use computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Ability to work some overtime, flexible hours, including evenings, overnights & weekends
Ability to meet planned deadlines and on occasion some unplanned deadlines as required.
A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle are a requirement
