Job Purpose
Under the direction of the Settlement and Community Support Director, the Settlement Support Worker in Schools assists refugee and immigrant students and their families with school related and cultural issues by providing connection to education and community services, counseling, facilitating group and individual programs, and coordinating the integration of services.
Duties and Responsibilities
Administration
Provides education, information and guidance to students, parents, teachers, and school administrators.
Helps students transition to life in Canada by providing school registration assistance, intake, assessments, practical guidance, counseling, referrals, home visits, and outreach activities.
Enhances communication by providing linguistic and cultural interpretation to students, parents, teachers, and other service providers.
Provides program information, maintains records, prepares required reports, participates in staff meetings, and communicates regularly with the Team Leader/Director.
Fosters equitable treatment of refugees and immigrants by keeping up-to-date on policies and programs affecting settlement.
Promotes respect for cultural diversity by informing and educating school personnel, parents, students, and the community regarding refugee and immigrant issues.
Assists in needs assessments and in the development of supporting programs and activities for clients, from proposal preparation to budget coordination and activity implementation.
Student Counselling and Guidance
Provides immediate intervention in crisis situations by establishing links between clients and available community resources, referring to programs or professional service providers, advocating, and participating in joint case management.
Manages cases by working with other professionals in high-risk situations, documenting case files, and sharing client information through case consultations.
Increases student and parent knowledge about the total range of opportunities and services available to them, providing information and practical guidance throughout the school year either individually or in small group sessions.
Community Involvement
Builds and sustains an effective working relationship with other professionals by establishing and maintaining a catalogue of community resources and contacts.
Maintains good working relationships with community service providers by advocating for clients, collaborating with program delivery partners, and making and following up on referrals.

Education and Experience
University degree in education, social work, or related field and, one year of work experience providing school age children/family counselling services; OR,
Graduate of post-secondary program (2 years minimum) in education or social sciences, and, two years' work experience providing school age children/family counselling services.
Experience working in a school setting with families, teachers and school administrators.
Experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
Conflict Management and mediation training.
Public speaking experience.
Experience conducting/facilitating workshops.
Utilizes office technology tools such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint at an intermediate level to support documentation, reporting, presentations, and collaborative work. Familiarity with virtual meetings and promotional platforms and basic database systems is required.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
Criminal Occurrence Security Check - Must complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check in good standing and within three months prior to first day of employment.
