Course description:




A series of modules designed to provide an introduction to practical methods in basic statistics and geographic information systems (GIS).


The objective of this course is to provide students with a solid background and experience in applying the most common statistical methods they are likely to encounter in Forestry with a goal is to improve numeracy and facility in dealing with and interpreting quantitative data in the natural sciences. Lectures will present topics and methods as well as underlying theory. Elementary understanding of basic mathematical concepts is expected. Tutorials will serve as laboratory sessions during which students will have the opportunity to refine their understanding of the topics presented in lecture through hands-on exercises using the statistical programming software R.

Salary (per half-course, inclusive of vacation):



Note that this position is for the Statistics module ONLY, and the salary is pro-rated at 50%


Sessional Lecturer I: $4,910.35

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $5,255.02

Sessional Lecturer II: $5,255.02

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $5,380.14

Sessional Lecturer III: $5,380.14

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $5,514.64

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications

: Must have a strong background in statistical methods and different data types in forest conservation and experimental design; understand the overall inferential framework of frequentist statistics; expertise using the statistical programming platform R.

Description of duties

: Prepare and deliver seminars, maintain course notes and readings, set and mark course assignments; compile, record and submit final marks. Be available to students through regular office hours.
