Description:

The course will provide a general introduction to the most important methods of geophysical exploration. Topics covered will include physical principles, methodology, interpretational procedures and field application of various geophysical survey methods. Concepts/methods used to determine the distribution of physical properties at depths that reflect the local surface geology will be discussed.

Salary: Starting September 1, 2023 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9457.89 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $9,930.79 for a Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $10,151.76 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,326.61 for an Sessional Lecturer II Long Term; 10,362.76 Sessional Lecturer III; and $10,570.02 for a Sessional Lecturer III Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. or a M.Sc. degree specializing in geophysics. Experience teaching a course in geophysical techniques and the underlying principles at the university level is required. A Professional Geoscientist of Ontario (P.Geo.) designation is an asset. The ideal candidate should have experience with planning and guiding geophysical surveys, processing, and interpretation. Previous experience operating ground-penetrating radar, resistivity, and seismic survey equipment (including sub-bottom profilers) and demonstrating the use of processing software (KKO_Project, RES2DINV, REFLEXW, EdgeTech Discover) in a similar course is highly desirable. We are seeking previous experience in teaching, teaching excellence, mastery of subject area, geoscience background, scientific research, and field experience. Knowledge of appropriate local field sites, safe fieldwork practices, and First Aid Certification is preferred.

Duties:

The instructor will be responsible for effectively delivering the course with all the attendant organizational issues of lecture and practical preparation and delivery, setting, supervision and marking of assignments/exams, final course marks, course evaluations, and holding regular office hours in person.

Lectures are currently scheduled Mondays from 15:00-17:00; Practicals on Tuesdays 14:00-16:00
