CRI393H1F Topics in CrimSL (Transitional Justice) (0.5 FCE)

Course Description:

This is a 3rd year undergraduate course focusing on the field of transitional justice (TJ). The course delves into the history, practices, challenges and prospects of TJ as a mechanism employed by societies emerging from periods of political violence or authoritarianism to peace and democracy. Classes will focus on a range of topics like 1-Introduction to the field of TJ, 2-Contentious debates in TJ (peace vs justice, retributive vs restorative, and local vs international). The next segment of the course will look at TJ mechanisms like 3-Criminal prosecutions, 4-Truth seeking &reconciliation (including case studies of Canada's TRC, Columbia and others around the world), 5-Amnesties, 6-Reparations, 7-Memory and memorialization, and 8-Institutional and security sector reforms (SSR). The final segment of the course will cover topics like 9-Gender justice, 10-Traditional and community-based justice mechanisms (eg. Gacaca courts in Rwanda), 11-Civil society & victims' participation in TJ policy advocacy, and a discussion of prospects of the field broadly. The course format will include a combination of lectures, class activities, and guest speakers.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Criminology and Sociolegal Studies

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in the histories of legal aid, Indigenous justice, and the Canadian legal-administrative state; teaching experience across diverse institutions and law and society disciplines; track record of award-wining publications in field-leading journals.

Description of duties:

All duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; printing of course material; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; and order all necessary readings.
