Position Description The Department of Art and Art History within the Faculty of Arts invites applications for Sessional Instructors to teach courses in Spring and Summer 2023. Lectures for the spring 2023 term run from May 3 to June 15, and lectures for the summer 2023 term run from June 26 to August 8; however, some course offerings may run for three weeks rather than six weeks. Individual course dates are noted below; please see the academic schedule for additional important dates and deadlines. NOTE: THE FOLLOWING COURSE OFFERINGS ARE TENTATIVE, PENDING SUFFICIENT ENROLMENTS. SPRING 2023
ART 311.20: Topics in Art (Approaches to Art Therapy) Course dates: May 3 to June 15, 2023
Instruction Mode: Web-based, synchronous on Tuesday and Thursday 13:00-15:45
Course description: Topics related to contemporary studio and curatorial practices such as spirituality, exhibitions, digital storytelling, new media, or public art. Topic description: This course offers introductory perspectives to the subject and profession of art therapy, its history, theory and practice. It aims to acquaint students to the potentials of symbolic visual expression and the creative process in relation to art therapy clinical applications, as well as through an experiential workshop component.
SUMMER 2023

ART 235: Introduction to Photography and Digital Imaging Course dates: June 26 to August 8, 2023
Monday through Thursday, 09:00 - 11:45
Course description: An introductory course in current photographic methods, including digital photography, digital image processing and the presentation of photographs.

ART 311.01: Topics in Art (Interactive Storytelling)
Course dates: June 26-August 8, 2023
Monday / Wednesday, 13:00 - 15:45
Course description: Topics related to contemporary studio and curatorial practices such as spirituality, exhibitions, digital storytelling, new media, or public art. Topic description: This course explores the techniques, structures, and possibilities of storytelling in which the reader/viewer can make decisions which impact the story itself. The course focuses on interactive storytelling as implemented in digital platforms such as video games, the internet, interactive fiction and film, and augmented/virtual reality. We will also discuss some examples of interactive storytelling in non-digital media. Students will learn concepts relevant to interactive storytelling, consider examples in a variety of genres, and complete assignments leading to the generation of an interactive story using tools appropriate for beginners.
Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A terminal degree in Art or Art History is required (MA or MFA, but a studio-based PhD is preferred for Art courses and a PhD in Art History is required for Art History courses).
  • Applicants must possess experience teaching undergraduate university courses; prior experience teaching large classes (200+ students) will be considered an asset for the large enrolment courses (ARHI 201).
  • Outstanding professional achievement or substantial training in the field specified in the job announcement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching experience at the university level.
Desirable Skills and Abilities:
  • Energy, enthusiasm and commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • The willingness to work with students having a wide range of skills, varying abilities, motivations, and academic or vocational goals.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
  • The ability to use instructional strategies designed for diverse learning styles and academic goals.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of current literature on art.
