Sessional Instructors: Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science




The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, within the Faculty of Science, invites applications for

Winter 2026

Sessional Instructor(s).


The successful candidates will have responsibilities for lecture instruction, lab co-ordination, and any other associated duties, for these courses offered during the Winter 2026 session. If the assigned lecture section is part of a coordinated course, then the successful candidate will be expected to follow any course assessments and policies that are established by the course coordinator. Please note that the contract start date for all Winter sessional positions is December 1, 2025.

DATA 606 - Statistical Methods in Data Science

Design of surveys and data collection, bias and efficiency of surveys. Sampling weights and variance estimation. Multi-way contingency tables and introduction to generalized linear models with emphasis on applications.

DATA 607 - Statistical and Machine Learning

Latent variable models for clustering and dimension reduction. Parametric and nonparametric methods for regression and classification including naive Bayes, decision trees, random forests, and boosting. Model assessment and selection. Deep learning.

DATA 609 - Modelling of Financial and Energy Markets Data

Coverage of main tools and techniques for modelling, machine learning and statistical analysis of big data in financial and energy markets. Topics will include: a simple financial and energy market models; risk-free and risky assets data modelling; discrete-time and continuous-time financial and energy market data modelling (CRR, Black-Scholes); modelling of forwards, futures, swaps in financial and energy markets; risk-neutral valuation, options, option pricing with financial and energy markets data; world energy data trends-crude oil, natural gas, and electricity; renewable energy data modelling: wind, solar, etc.

DATA 610 - Advanced Modelling of Financial and Energy Markets Data

More advanced coverage of tools and techniques for modelling of financial and energy markets data. Topics will include: modelling of dynamics for forwards and futures in energy and options in financial markets data; Black-76 and Margrabe's formulas for pricing of futures and options contracts; modelling paradigms beyond Black-76; data modelling with stochastic interest rates; one-, two- and three-factor Schwartz's models (with stochastic convenience yield and interest rate) for pricing forward and futures data in energy markets; modelling of high-frequency and algorithmic trading data.

MATH 211 - Linear Methods I

An introduction to systems of linear equations, vectors in Euclidean space and matrix algebra. Additional topics include linear transformations, determinants, complex numbers, eigenvalues, and applications.

MATH 249 - Introductory Calculus

An introduction to single variable calculus. Limits, derivatives and integrals of algebraic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions play a central role. Additional topics include applications of differentiation, the fundamental theorem of calculus, improper integrals and applications of integration.

MATH 265 - University Calculus I

An introduction to single variable calculus intended for students with credit in high school calculus. Limits, derivatives, and integrals of algebraic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions play a central role. Additional topics include applications of differentiation; the fundamental theorem of calculus, improper integrals and applications of integration. Differential calculus in several variables will also be introduced.

MATH 267 - University Calculus II

A concluding treatment of single variable calculus and an introduction to calculus in several variables. Single variable calculus: techniques of integration, sequences, series, convergence tests, and Taylor series. Calculus of several variables: partial differentiation, multiple integration, parametric equations, and applications.

MATH 277 - Multivariable Calculus for Engineers and Scientists

An introduction to calculus of several real variables: curves and parametrizations, partial differentiation, the chain rule, implicit functions; integration in two and three variables and applications; optimization and Lagrange multipliers.

STAT 213 - Introduction to Statistics I

Introduction to probability, including Bayes' law, expectations and distributions. Discrete and continuous random variables, including properties of the normal curve. Collection and visual display of single and multi-dimensional data. Introduction to statistical modelling and estimation. Parametric and simulation-based confidence interval estimation.

Qualifications:




Applicants should have a minimum of an MSc in Mathematics and Statistics or a closely related discipline, however, a PhD is preferred. Preference will be given to graduate students and postdocs in our program looking to obtain teaching experience, followed by applicants with a postgraduate degree.
