Sessional Instructor: Education

Secondary Mathematics

Part time, Sessional

POSITION SUMMARY

The Faculty of Education at The King's University is seeking a sessional instructor in Education - Secondary

Mathematics for the following courses in the Winter Term of the 2025-26 academic year.

EDUC 320 and 420 are a two-course sequence of curriculum and instruction courses in teaching mathematics

and science at the secondary level.

EDUC 320 is for first-year after-degree B.Ed. students, and maintains a focus on teaching at the junior high

school level. EDUC 420 is for second-year students with a focus on teaching at the senior high school level.

Both courses are team taught with a mathematics and science educator. This position is for the mathematics

half of the teaching team.

The courses are offered following an intensive format in Winter term:

EDUC 320 - MWF afternoons from 1:00-4:00 pm for the weeks of January 5, 12, 19, 26 and the
mornings of the week (M-Th) of February 2-6 from 9:00-12:00.
EDUC 420 - MWF mornings from 9:00 am -12:00 pm for the weeks of January 5, 12, 19, with a final
class session on Monday, Jan. 26.
The schedule is equitably shared between mathematics and science instruction so classroom teaching is not

assumed for all of the dates above. The exact schedule will be determined in conjunction with the instructor

responsible for the science component.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

EDUC 320 - Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary Mathematics I

This curriculum and instruction course provides an in-depth study of the methods and materials used in the

teaching of junior high school mathematics and science with a special focus on the Alberta curriculum guides

for these subjects. This course helps Math and Science pre-service teachers to understand both the theoretical

and pedagogical underpinnings of mathematics and sciences as their major/minor teaching area.

EDUC 420 - Curriculum and Instruction in Secondary Mathematics II

This course continues the examination of the main currents at play in mathematics and science education

begun in EDUC 320, with particular application to the senior high school. This will lead to a careful scrutiny of

how curricula portray mathematics and science and how pedagogical practices can enable effective teaching

in both disciplines at the senior high level. Students will also be challenged to see mathematics and science

teaching within a broader cultural and religious framework.
