In this course, we discuss data analytics and visualizations using Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep software. We survey methods for data cleaning and preparation using ETL (Extract, Transform, Load). We examine best practices in developing dashboards and understand how to tell a story with health and biological data. Our overall goal is to provide a foundation for using Tableau in data-driven decision-making in the life sciences. Visualization with Tableau will be supplemented with R coding techniques that students have learned from previous courses.


Upon completion of this course, students will be able to frame various classes of healthcare problems as analytics problems using Tableau and identify appropriate data sources to build visualizations. Students will practice planning and developing interactive dashboards that help address analytical issues and provide data accessibility to a non-technical audience.

Description of Duties:



Marking assignments, having done suitable preparation (careful reading of cases). Meet with students occasionally to discuss assignments. Invigilating the final exam. Assist in marking of tests and final exams. Attend each class meeting to provide feedback and assist the Professor in organizing the class Consult with students by email.

Preferably a PhD student, a suitably qualified graduate student, or a working professional.


The candidate must be well-versed in SQL (CTEs, complex joins, data modelling), Excel, and Tableau. The candidate must also be able to be at the UTM campus once a week for an hour.

Class Schedule:

Wednesdays, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Sessional date of appointment:

January 5, 2026 - April 30, 2026

Salary:



The minimum hourly rate shall be:

September 1, 2025 $54.27 + vacation pay
