The Senior Writer is responsible for maintaining the written voice of the MUHC Foundation through development of stories, donor impact reports, web copy, proposals, correspondence, speeches and much more. Playing a key collaborative role within the organization, this strategic and inspiring story-teller helps define how giving to the MUHC Foundation, in support of the MUHC, has the power to change the course of lives and medicine.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Communications and Marketing, the Senior Writer is a key strategic writer for the foundation, responsible for driving the development of marketing and communications materials, as well as key documents for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors. The Senior Writer is responsible for managing the foundation\xe2\x80\x99s writing team to execute comprehensive, donor-centric communications that inspire giving and showcase the impact of philanthropy.

The incumbent has a strong ability to distill complex scientific and clinical information into easy-to-understand content that can be shared with donors and stakeholders.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Lead writer responsible for development, implementation and delivery of compelling communications materials (stories, press releases, website copy, etc.) that will engage our donors and inspire them to give.
  • Maintain a superior understanding of the foundation\xe2\x80\x99s fundraising goals, articulating how these goals advance the mission of the hospital, and conveying the impact of philanthropy to a variety of audiences.
  • Maintain the foundation\xe2\x80\x99s brand voice and ensure consistency of voice in all written content.
  • Engage with the development team as well as hospital and research institute leadership to develop compelling, persuasive and impactful communications materials.
  • Responsible for producing compelling donor stewardship reports to demonstrate the impact of philanthropy on health care at the MUHC.
  • Supervise the work of the Writer, Proposals and Grants and help facilitate their work with the development team to prepare personalized major gift proposals.
  • Participate in strategy discussions and creation of fundraising campaigns sent via email and traditional mail.
  • Produce engaging e-newsletters to inform the foundation\xe2\x80\x99s donor base of fundraising campaigns, new gifts, events and other exciting news.
  • Oversee donor and volunteer recognition award programs and nominations.
  • Produce compelling reports on the impact of giving, including the MUHC Foundation\xe2\x80\x99s annual report.
  • Develop speeches and speaking points to support key volunteers and leadership.
  • Copy-edit and proofread content as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a relevant field (English, communications, marketing, journalism)
  • Minimum of 2 years\xe2\x80\x99 writing experience
  • Mastery of written English and experience writing in a wide range of styles and formats
  • Experience supervising
  • Experience working in a fundraising/non-profit environment and familiarity with major gift and annual fundraising is an asset
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to meet deadlines and juggle priorities, sometimes on short notice
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (particularly Word)
