What will you do?

• Act as a senior professional directly supporting the implementation of the ISO 14001 certified corporate environmental management system
• Provide expert decisions and recommendations for mitigating risk to wildlife and habitat, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations
• Assess, train, coach, and mentor staff involved in wildlife, ecosystem, and environmental management activities, building their capacity
• Oversee and ensure alignment of competency and compliance with internal standard operating procedures and applicable environmental legislation and regulations
• Advise on operational controls and protocol for wildlife that may include complex considerations for birds, bats, beavers, snakes, squirrels, and others
• Lead investigations for non-compliance situations and incidents, including root cause investigations for systemic issues, assigning corrective actions, and directing continual improvement programs
• Liaise with regulators, document and report incidents, negotiate and establish environmental permits, and provide expert testimony in court proceedings when required
• Develop and implement resource management plans and define success factors and Key Performance Indicators for compliance
• Manage and provide project management support for environmental programs and projects
• Build relationships and interactions with City staff and managing supervisors, government regulatory bodies, citizens, consultants, and other key stakeholders
• Review, research, and maintain awareness of best management practices, environmental legislation and emerging issues, as well as advise leadership on related objectives and strategies
• Ensure documentation, registries, and records are maintained to support the City's environmental management system and processes

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Science with a specialization in wildlife or a related scientific discipline
• 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in overseeing bird and other wildlife sweeps and surveys, assessing risk, implementing mitigations, and developing and implementing protocols that comply with applicable regulations
• Demonstrated ability to accurately identify birds and behaviour through acoustic and visual observations and provide appropriate advice based on species and landscape context
• Proven ability to positively work with provincial and federal regulators on complex regulatory files
• Experience with assessing competence and providing professional review and sign off for bird and wildlife surveys conducted by employees
• Experience leading wildlife work that considers an urban setting
• Must be a Professional Biologist registered in good standing with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB)

ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certification is required and must be obtained within the first six months of employment
Knowledge and skills required for success:

• Core wildlife and habitat management expertise: Robust knowledge in environmental management, permitting, provincial and federal wildlife protocols, compliance procedures, and relevant legislation. This includes understanding and identifying species range, habitat, natural history, and behaviour
• Field experience and practical application: Hands-on experience with bird and wildlife surveys, best management practices, nest survey appropriateness, and establishing setbacks and mitigation suitable to risk
• Competent wildlife identification: High proficiency in general species identification for the Edmonton region and absolute proficiency in identifying Species of Conservation Concern (SOCC)
• Leadership and management capabilities: Compelling environmental champion with the ability to strategize using strong analytical and critical thinking skills alongside incident investigation, risk assessment and management skills, and experience with environmental management systems (like ISO 14001)
• Communication and interpersonal diplomacy: Strong verbal and written communication for diverse audiences, negotiation, conflict management, general leadership, supervisory skills, and effective planning and organization.

Conditions of employment and work environment:

• Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
• Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
• Salary Range: $108,838.80 - $136,046.09 (Annually)
• This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
• This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). This role may necessitate the use of personal transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
• This position requires moderate to light physical effort, for example: lifting up to 20 lbs, crawling and crouching, pulling, pushing and reaching, climbing ladders, physically able to identify birds, exposure to hot and cold extreme temperatures, dust, precipitation, brightness and dark, and exposure to animals
