Senior Water and Wastewater Operator

The Town of Lake Cowichan has an immediate opening for a full-time permanent position for a Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Lagoon Operator.

Lake Cowichan is a vibrant and growing community that is located on the eastern end of Cowichan Lake (26 km long) and the headwaters of the famous Cowichan River designated a heritage river and the capital of river tubing and summer lake activities. It is only one hour from the capital Victoria BC and 45 minutes from Nanaimo, BC. A beautiful drive to Port Renfrew, only 45 minutes to the West coast. Where one can find great fishing, surfing and other outdoor activities.



Position



The employee is expected to have full knowledge of the operation of a water treatment plant and wastewater lagoons. The individual will be expected to be able to undertake some outdoor all-weather work.



Skills and Abilities



EOCP level III in water treatment and level II in wastewater treatment

(OR THE WILLINGNESS AND ABILITY TO ATTAIN THESE DESIGNATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE).

The ability to conduct water quality tests in accordance with the guidelines of all Vancouver Island Health Authority and B.C. provincial requirements. Analyze test results and adjust chemical feed rates as required. Use Malvern zeta sizer to optimize coagulant dosage on charge. Operate treatment facility process through SCADA. Monitor operation of treatment plant equipment such as anthracite /sand filter, soda ash hopper and mixing tanks peristatic pumps, and other chemical feed systems. Inspect, monitor, and operate the wastewater lagoon system to ensure optimal treatment performance. Perform routine sampling and laboratory testing, including pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS). Monitor and adjust aeration as required, Conduct regular inspections of lift stations, perform preventative maintenance and trouble shoot operational issues. Ensure we meet all ministry requirements as per operating permit.




Requirements



Two-year Water Engineering Technology education program related discipline (i.e. environmental sciences, environmental or chemical technology) preferred. B.C. EOCP Level III or higher water treatment operator certificate and Level II or higher Wastewater treatment (

OR THE WILLINGNESS AND ABILITY TO ATTAIN THESE DESIGNATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE).

Demonstrate initiative and ability to work cooperatively within a team environment. Experience in operating, troubleshooting, and basic repair of water and wastewater treatment equipment. Knowledge of basic process control systems and operating systems relates to water and wastewater treatment. Knowledge of safety practices, procedures, and occupational hazards in water and wastewater treatment. Physically capable of performing the duties of the position. Will be required to undergo and pass a police information check.

Salary



This is a unionized position under the (USW Local 1-1937) and a Municipal Pension.

Wages of $39.40 plus $0.75 per ticket /per level.
