The Role

Reporting to the Head of Sales and Distribution Vice Chair of IG Wealth Management, the Senior Vice President (SVP), Financial Services Distribution (Atlantic Canada), will lead the development and growth of IG's retail investment and planning business in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island in collaboration with the Regional Vice Presidents. Overseeing a team of ~24 people (Regional Vice Presidents, Division Directors and working with an Area VP), the SVP, Financial Services Distribution will be responsible for communicating and executing IG's strategic vision across Atlantic Canada (alongside five other SVPs covering the other Canadian regions). This includes building and maintaining systems, processes, and communications programs to support strong sales growth within the Advisor Network. The SVP will be accountable for creating an integrated business development strategy to grow revenue, market share, and assets under management. The SVP will spearhead and support the implementation of corporate-level and regional sales, marketing and operational initiatives to drive growth and productivity, and will ensure a rigorous performance management discipline. Working with the Area VPs, the SVP will develop strong working relations with external, community and industry bodies. The SVP will stay abreast of emerging trends in wealth management and maintain a good understanding of competitors (e.g., market share, asset levels, product developments, compensation structures, talent pools, corporate developments, etc.) to inform recruitment and retention efforts and ensure that IG Wealth Management is well positioned for growth.

While a skilled strategist, the successful candidate must also be an accomplished leader capable of driving impressive results through team/capability building, coaching and mentorship. The SVP will bring a disciplined, entrepreneurial style and will relish the sales and service process, and gain satisfaction from winning business and client loyalty. The SVP must also be an excellent collaborator capable of forging strong alliances and partnerships with industry bodies and cross-functional teams across the Canadian business.

Key priorities for the role include:

Develop client-centric distribution strategies to support ambitious growth plans

Develop business development strategies, segmentation opportunities, sales and service capabilities and standards, and an aggressive recruitment pipeline to support ambitious growth objectives.

Ensure that the retail business has an effective plan for service delivery and sales execution; manage resource allocation of people, technology and selling tools while balancing market segment needs against costs and efficiency.

Act as an advocate for the client; continue to build a client-centric go-to-market approach and a value added financial planning service model.

Build a high performance distribution organization

Working closely with the Field Leadership team and Talent Acquisition to build a pipeline of top financial advisor talent

Establish a strong presence within the BC & Alberta regions; prioritize sales efforts to ensure the highest possible levels of production across the Advisor base.

Assess the talent and structure of the distribution organization and execute any required changes.

Ensure high quality teamwork across the distribution organization and maximize synergies with Marketing, Investment Management, and Customer Service/Operations functions. Ensure that there is continuous clarity around goals and feedback.

Ensure that selling technologies are effectively deployed and continuously upgraded in-line with distribution requirements and business goals.

Develop benchmarks and metrics and deploy meaningful measurements across the regions. Ensure that sales and service programs have quantifiable objectives and measurable results.

Take remedial action based on regular measurement of client satisfaction and competitive trends.

Prepare and manage distribution budgets and overall spending.

Develop leaders and training

Provide unambiguous, inspired leadership and sound management that establishes credibility with Regional/Division Directors and Advisors, and promotes a team culture.

Build and maintain a values-based, service oriented, high performance culture based on collaboration and individual/team accountability.

Lead targeted recruiting, skill building, coaching, and mentorship programs; ensure a rigorous training and development process for all staff.

Candidate Profile

The SVP, Financial Services Distribution will be a senior executive with 10+ years of retail wealth sales/distribution experience with a proven track record of driving superior results. The successful candidate will be known for her/his strong business acumen and ability to drive high impact sales/ distribution strategies in the financial planning industry. This includes introducing 'fresh thinking' around, for example, how to (i) address untapped segment/client needs (e.g., HNW clients), (ii) leverage technology to better service clients, and (iii) improve financial planning service. The SVP must also be well versed in sales and customer support technologies. The successful candidate must be an inspiring, visionary leader and an effective manager, team builder, coach and mentor. The SVP must be energized to work in a team environment (this is not a sold contributor role), particularly as results are team dependent.

In terms of performance and personal competencies required for this position, we would highlight the following:

  • Industry Structure and Practices: Has a deep understanding of the retail wealth management business, the economic environment, and global markets. Keeps abreast of key industry changes and takes appropriate action to ensure continued leadership and competitive advantage. IIROC distribution experience is critical; a demonstrated knowledge of advanced financial planning concepts (including tax planning) with a proven ability to deliver complex plans is key. This includes being comfortable partnering with financial planning specialists, e.g., mortgage experts, trust experts, etc. Having a good understanding of the high net worth (HNW) marketplace is highly desirable.
  • Strategic and Analytical Skills: Has a strong strategic orientation and is adept at identifying key market trends, opportunities, and organizational sales/distribution capabilities required to ensure Investor Group's competitive advantage. Has a stellar record of leading a sales/distribution/business development organization made complex by its size, multiple products, multiple channels and nationwide scope. Is able to "deep dive" into the details of the business while staying focused on the big picture.
  • Driving Results and Positive Change: A proven self-starter, sets clear and measurable performance objectives and closely monitors progress. Drives issues to closure, persisting despite obstacles and opposition. Keeps Regional/Division Directors and Advisors focused on the strategic business priorities and the achievement of results, while conveying a sense of urgency and ensuring expediency. Uses best in-class benchmarks and her/his own direct experience as catalysts for driving change.
  • Building and Managing Teams: Forges strong diverse teams of people with multiple perspectives and talents. Engages the team through enthusiasm and excitement about the business. Delegates significant responsibilities to team members and holds them accountable. Successfully recruits, develops and retains talented sales professionals.
  • Developing and Leveraging Relationships: Forges strong relationships at all levels within and outside the firm, bonding easily with others. Builds effective and trusted partnerships internally (with Investment Management, Marketing, Operations/Client service, the Advisor network) and externally (with industry associations/bodies).
  • Communication and Influence: Conveys passion, energy, intensity and excitement. Possesses strong verbal/written communications skills and interpersonal skills required to build credibility with and influence senior management, peers/colleagues, and external parties.
  • Academic: An undergraduate degree is required; completion of the CFP designation or equivalent is an asset
