Our Team:

The Thompson Mines Technical Services (MTS) Team is integral to the success of the operations in being a safe and reliable producer. We aim to design and plan safe, sustainable ore extraction through technical excellence in the areas of geology, mine planning, ventilation, backfill, ground control, drill/blast and survey control.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Ventilation Specialist to join our Mines Technical Services Team in Thompson, MB. This is an onsite permanent position.

As the Senior Ventilation Specialist, you will report directly to the Chief Mine Engineer and will be responsible for coordinating ventilation across the two mine operations. This role will work with the local ventilation planners as well as interacting with the North Atlantic (NA) Central Ventilation group, the mid-range planning group, the long-range planning group, operations, maintenance, and various support groups. Work time will be split between office and field depending on the priorities of the day.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Maintain mine site ventilation numerical models, ventilation design packages and troubleshooting ventilation system issues.
  • Work with NA Central Ventilation group to develop the 24-month mine ventilation plan and include required construction in the mine plan such that it is scheduled appropriately to reduce risk of impact to production.
  • Train ventilation planners on the correct use of tools, applications and procedures for data collection.
  • Communicate with the Central Vent Design team to support the Life of Mine Plan (LoMP) work through collection of data and identification of KPIs, trends and risks within the ventilation systems.
  • Provide inputs for the site Integrated Operating Schedule.
  • Develop scopes of work, as assigned, that support changes to ventilation systems within the mine.
  • Maintain mine site Underground Fire and Escape Route Plans.
  • Communication to varying audiences, including operations, Joint Health and Safety Committee, mine regulatory groups and mine management.
  • Train ventilation staff and underground supervisors (and others) on correct use, care and calibration of measurement tools, as well as correct data collection techniques.
  • Accompany ventilation planners executing regulatory ventilation data collection, per recommended schedule, to monitor procedures and quality of collection.
  • Data collection and analysis, on a quarterly basis, to understand the efficiency and any changes that may be occurring within the ventilation system.
  • Ensure ventilation readings are taken as per regulatory requirements and that the measured flows match those of design. Troubleshoot and advise on corrective actions as required.
About You

Education:
  • Post-Secondary diploma in Mining Technology or a related discipline or Undergraduate Degree in Mining Engineering or related Engineering field
Experience:
  • 5-7 years of underground mining experience is required.
Skills:
  • Knowledge of Underground Mine ventilation systems, mine design and a high-level understanding of underground mining activities.
  • Knowledge of ventilation modeling software is an asset.
  • Expert knowledge in numerical modeling
  • Expert knowledge of MS office Products (Excel, word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication skills and development of concise documents and presentation materials
  • Experience with 3D mine design software (Deswik preferred)
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
