Job Summary


As the only dental school in Atlantic Canada, the Faculty of Dentistry has been offering an outstanding education in dentistry and dental hygiene for more than 100 years, and is a key part of Dalhousie's inter-professional and allied health community that includes the Faculties of Medicine and Health. Reporting to the Biomaterials & Applied Oral Sciences (BAOS) Department Chair, the Senior Technician provides technical support for research programs carried out by the faculty and staff of the BAOS department, with a focus on research activities related to materials characterization and processing, including supervision and training on related core research equipment.


Key Responsibilities


Maintain and oversee BAOS research facilities and equipment, ensuring smooth operations through routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Provide technical support for research activities by assisting with material processing and testing, protocol development, and apparatus design. Conduct pilot studies and stay current with analytical techniques to support faculty and staff research programs. Serve as the primary contact for external requests to access BAOS research equipment and facilities, ensuring proper usage and adherence to safety protocols. Develop and update standard operating procedures for biomaterials processing and characterization equipment, ensuring compliance with Faculty of Dentistry and Dalhousie University safety standards. Ensure laboratory safety and chemical compliance by enforcing safety standards for all research personnel. Maintain accurate SDS records and chemical inventories for BAOS labs, monitor adherence to required certifications, and manage the procurement of consumables, gas cylinders, and small equipment.

Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.




Required Qualifications


Undergraduate degree in Chemistry or a related field plus approximately three - five years' related experience in a research setting (or an equivalent combination of training and experience). Previous laboratory work experience and/or experience in a healthcare environment. Familiarity with materials characterization equipment. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population while being adaptable and maintaining a strong safety focus.
