Position Summary

An exciting opportunity exists in our corporate office in Toronto for a Senior Tax Analyst.

Reporting to the Director, Treasury & Tax, the Senior Tax Analyst will be responsible for execution of various tax compliance including income tax, sales tax, and foreign affiliate calculations.

Accountabilities

  • Prepare Canadian and Barbadian corporate income tax returns.
  • Prepare Sherritt legal entity and consolidated quarterly and year-end tax provision, including preparation of required financial statement note and MD&A disclosure.
  • Review BU tax provision working papers.
  • Prepare foreign affiliate information returns, non-resident withholding tax returns, and foreign affiliate surplus calculations and determine the tax implications arising from dividend repatriations and upstream loans.
  • Calculate and/or review estimated tax balances and loss utilization profiles for budgeting, forecasting and tax planning purposes as required.
  • Coordinate income tax audits with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and other tax authorities as required.
  • Identify tax savings opportunities with the Manager, Tax and/or Director, Treasury & Tax and assist in the implementation of transactions to capitalize on those opportunities.
  • Perform tax research on specific tax issues or transactions as required and draft memos outlining analysis, conclusion and recommendations.
  • Assist the Manager, Tax and/or Director, Treasury & Tax through research, analysis and discussion, with tax structuring for potential acquisitions, dispositions, financings, cash repatriations or other transactions.
  • Ensure compliance with Canadian income tax regulations and other jurisdictions (with local returns in Cuba and Madagascar being the accountability of the local controllers or local tax manager).
  • Maintain files to support all tax filing positions, tax accounting entries, assessment/audit information, tax cost base figures, etc.
  • Review/prepare HST tax returns for Corporate entities.
  • Monitor Canadian and international tax issues related to Sherritt International Corporation.
Qualifications and Skills
  • University Degree and CPA, CA designation
  • Completion of CICA In-depth Tax Course Parts 1 and 2
  • 3+ years of tax experience in public practice or industry, preferably Mining/ Oil & Gas
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian taxation issues with a strong background in tax provisions and corporate tax compliance
  • Knowledge of the accounting for income taxes under IFRS in a multinational context.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify tax issues and propose appropriate resolutions
  • Interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
