The Opportunity:
We are currently seeking a Senior Tax Analyst, Indirect Tax to join our Tax team in Toronto. This is a permanent position.
Senior Tax Analyst - Indirect Tax, reporting to the Head of Tax, Base Metals, is accountable to carry out the Indirect Tax compliance functions for the Vale Base Metals group of companies including Value Added Tax (VAT/GST/HST/QST), MB Retail Sales Tax and withholding taxes (including "Reg 105" and "Part XIII") and related indirect tax processes; with the primary objective to ensure tax compliance including reviewing areas of tax risk associated with evaluating and processing large volumes of data. This position is accountable for the accurate completion and timely filing of all Vale Base Metals group of companies' indirect tax filings, which includes Vale Canada Limited, Vale Newfoundland & Labrador Limited, Vale Technology Development (Canada) Limited - in Canada; as well as Vale Americas Inc. (USA). As well, this position is accountable for account reconciliations, month end journal entries and audit of indirect tax transactions for accuracy and tax compliance. The Senior Tax Analyst is also accountable for assisting with and completing T2, T106 and T1134 corporate tax reporting and external audit queries as well as ensuring tax payments are issued on time.
Key Responsibilities:
Timely and accurate tax compliance
Prepare Vale Base Metal's indirect tax returns {HST, Regulation 105, Non-resident withholding tax returns, related annual returns, etc} in a timely manner, including compiling and validating the accuracy of data for the preparation of indirect tax returns.
Prepare data and worksheets to support tax audits and serve as point of contact for audits.
Analyze current data to determine any tax liability that must be self-assessed.
Develop and enhance relationships with the procurement and operations teams.
Identify and prepare month end journal entries as required for indirect tax transactions.
Identify and document any new indirect tax requirements for set up in the Financial Accounting System by the technical support group.
Handle incoming calls and e-mails from the Procurement, Operational and Capital Projects teams about outstanding tax issues or questions in a prompt and professional manner.
Evaluate and resolve invoice releasing problems through discussions with the appropriate personnel in the operations regarding correct tax codes and processes to follow including developing tools to assist in improving accuracy of these functions, where required.
Research and document tax positions recommended as well as special projects assigned.
Review procurement contracts/SOW and provide advice on taxes payable on the supply.
Assist in the communication and training of indirect tax policies and procedures.
Reconciliations, as part of remittances (multi-provincial).
Timely and accurate submission of tax remittances for all Vale Canada companies.
Provide subject matter expertise regarding tax issues and questions.
Provide functional expertise in SAP financial system processes related to indirect tax
Understand the SAP functionality and logic in terms of billing tax on revenue and calculating rebates of tax and self-assessing tax on payment of accounts payable invoices.
Enhance the Vale Base Metals' indirect tax compliance by providing training, advice, and identifying and implementing process improvements
Provide practical and technically correct advice and guidance on questions related to indirect tax.
Develop and provide training on indirect tax matters to stakeholders and other teams to enhance knowledge of indirect tax matters and compliance.
Identify and implement process improvements designed to improve indirect tax compliance or efficiency in achieving indirect tax compliance.
Keep current in tax matters in the industry and ensure Vale Base Metals remains up to date.
Proactively identify tax topics requiring further investigation, mitigate tax risks and investigate tax opportunities.
About You
Undergraduate degree is required
CPA preferred
Experience
2-5 years of experience in a similar subject area
Skills:
Strong accounting and financial reporting skills to be able to collect and interpret financial information and assess evidentiary risk
Excellent understanding and skill set with SAP systems and MS application software - particularly Excel
Exceptional attention to detail.
Works independently with a strong work ethic.
Team player who works collaboratively with colleagues; establish and maintain relationships with other corporate and operations departments develop efficient information flow and to identify issues and opportunities as early as possible in the planning cycle.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to be able to convey concepts to internal and external stakeholders.
