JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Senior Syst/Tech/Appl Analyst.

Reporting to the Section Head, Information Systems, this position is responsible to do the following:

Evaluate, recommend, develop, and maintain information systems, databases, computer tools and models for energy market operations, generation dispatch, generation and river flow forecasting, simulation and optimization of water resources utilization and management as well as helping business groups better manage their assets and run their business. Provide leadership and technical support for IT projects in the design, development, assurance testing, deployment, training, daily operation, and life cycle management of the computer tools. Promote modern technologies such as AI, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Data Lake, and Cloud Computing in Azure for development of new applications. Provide ongoing support of IT systems and services. Provide consulting support and training to internal and external clients.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Participate and support the assembly and development of business requirements for project feasibility and release proposals, business cases, project rollout activities, and post implementation reviews.
  • Provide support for project management, technical leadership and system expertise to projects and teams involved in preparation of business requirements and system specifications, design, development, QA and system integration testing, commissioning, user acceptance testing, deployment, and support of the systems or tools deployed in production.
  • Prepare correspondence on financial issues, commitment of resources, work schedules, and proposals for simple to medium-complex projects.
  • As a service delivery IT professional, collaborate with business on IT services to assist in assuring that service demands and service delivery levels are aligned with business needs and priorities. Demonstrate and report to business leaders of the services delivered through IT service performance reports and dashboards, and degree of compliance with established Operating Level Agreements.
  • Provide advice and guidance to site staff regarding IT policy and procedure interpretation, and develop operational practices and procedures required for the secure operation and management of systems and tools, ensuring compliance to corporate technical & security standards.
  • Prepare and review specifications, proposals, investigative reports, business case documents, design documents, maintenance documentation, operating instructions, and user and technical manuals.
  • Provide consultative services and specialized expertise in information-technology areas including the deployment and utilization of integrated information technology products and related services.
  • Research commercial products, tools, and emerging technologies which can be used in the design and support of information systems and tools.
  • Develop and maintain standards, procedures, methodologies and tools for information-technology staff.
  • Resolve operating issues according to their business priorities, and emergency problems under time constraints for the computer applications and systems supported.
  • Review requirements and priorities of system enhancement requests with the Business, manage customer demands and expectations, and recommend solutions to maximize business value at minimum cost.
  • Identify training needs, prepare training materials, and provide training and education to user groups for simple to complex products, systems, or databases. Prepare user instructions in the form of written documentation (manuals and on-line user aids), and demonstrate usage.
  • Assign work to staff assisting in the work, provide guidance, and schedule their activities. Monitor the quality of work performed. Identify the training needs of staff and provide input to line supervisors for the preparation of training plans.
  • Provide second level technical support to operations and maintenance staff. Provide support, and oversight to internal or external staff engaged in the delivery of IT services.
  • Help manage the evolution of existing IT environment, infrastructure, and facilities including servers, networks, security and disaster recovery.
  • Recommend, develop and maintain integrated and advanced computer applications and information systems for business processes related to economic and secure operation of generation assets, successful participation in the commercial electricity marketplace, production of generation dispatch plans, water resources management, river flow and water utilization forecasting, and miscellaneous planning and scheduling functions to assist Market Operations and related business groups in carrying out their business functions and accountabilities.
  • Maintain and support corporate/off-site/plant tools and systems. Plan, install, maintain, manage, and administer the delivery of application support services.
  • Participate and support service delivery improvement initiatives. Identify, investigate, and propose opportunities for cost reductions. Identify opportunities for information solutions that will provide substantial benefits for customers.
  • Provide technical notes, guidelines, and advice to customers on selection, acquisition, migration, usage and application of all but the most complex information technology products and related services.
  • Participate in the negotiation, acquisition, and administration of vendor contracts and license maintenance agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with OPG\'s Contractor Management program while in the IT service delivery role, by acting as contract administrator and site monitor for key vendors, ensuring safe work practices, validating job safety plans etc.
EDUCATION
  • 4- Year University Degree in Engineering or Computer Science program
  • Post-graduate degree in advanced mathematical modeling and/or artificial intelligence/machine learning as applied to power system, energy markets, and/or water resources operations an asset.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 6+ years of relevant experience is needed for this role
  • Requires experience to obtain knowledge of the clients\' organizations, functions of the application systems, databases, products, computers, communications, and associated equipment.
  • Requires additional experience to operate at a senior level, and to become familiar with responsibilities related to project leadership.
  • Requires experience to perform an advisory function to the line of business, to be able to define clients\' information technology requirements and advise regarding the selection and application of computer systems and equipment.
  • Requires experience to understand new and existing information processing concepts, computer and communications equipment, and software.
  • Requires experience in dealing with the line of business to obtain knowledge of the functions of the systems as well as the processes, policies and procedures.
  • Advanced skills in programming with a variety of programming languages (such as C#.net, Python, VB.net, and Excel VBA) using databases based on the MS SQL Server database system along with the associated SQL Scripts & Stored Procedures. Good understanding of web technologies in the .net framework and web development tools (including HTML, ASP, ADO, CSS, AngularJS, and Javascripts), Microsoft technologies (including PowerBI, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, DevOps, and Azure), and new cloud technologies (such as SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, Data Lake, Databricks, Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Containers, and CI/CD).
  • Requires experience in the development and design of information systems, computerized simulation and/or optimization applications.
  • Knowledge and experience in modeling with AI and machine learning techniques is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying advanced mathematical models to power system, energy markets, and/or water resources operations is an asset.
