The Faculty\'s divisional IT team, Information & Instructional Technology (IIT) and local, departmental IT teams are a crucial source of support for faculty teaching, research and administrative operations. IIT works closely and collaboratively with institutional teams as well as local IT teams to champion and support technology initiatives as well as provide some key division wide IT services. In addition, IIT supports the technology needs for numerous departments, centers, schools and institutes including day to day computing, infrastructure fulfillment (systems, networking and data center), public web services and application development. We are a well-respected, service-oriented team that aims to deliver timely support and quality work, imperative for the smooth operation of our faculty.

Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Manager - Infrastructure, the Senior Systems and Network Administrator administers both physical and virtualized systems on a variety of platforms including Unix/Linux, Windows, and Apple OS/X. The incumbent\'s duties include: configuring, administering, maintaining, troubleshooting and resolving issues on a variety of platforms; creating and maintaining virtual server installations; administering and maintaining application servers; acts as a resources to a group of specialists on systems management desktop solutions (KACE, Bomgar etc.) and projects including Active Directory integration; responsible for delivering a functional and secure infrastructure; implementing daily support, administration, and maintenance of critical applications; and supporting application development cycle activities for the Applications & Development and Client Services teams. The incumbent also installs software, performs OS updates, advises on software and hardware refresh cycle, and assists in supporting and maintaining Faculty of Arts andScience networks. They are responsible for costing shop level projects, collaborating on IT-related purchase recommendations and cost estimates for new technologies that may aid in increasing the productivity and efficiency of services and resources at the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and programming network applications
  • Analyzing and installing networking equipment
  • Configuring system applications according to needs
  • Monitoring the performance and integrity of servers
  • Troubleshooting complex computer system problems
  • Executing security measures for network devices and introducing variations as required
  • Providing detailed analysis and recommendations on the suitability of major new technology and software systems; collaborating on cost estimates
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in computer science or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years related experience working in a complex, heterogeneous computing environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Unix/Linux, Windows and Apple OS/X operating systems, server and workstations; virtualized servers (VSphere, VMware).
  • Working experience with Web-based solution design and implementation, Web server administration, and application development support.
  • Demonstrated understanding of networks, networking equipment, VLANs, VPNs and VoIP in order to assist in configuration, maintenance and monitoring.
  • Working knowledge of a range of computing equipment and software including Unix/Linux and OS/X (workstations, servers), Windows (workstations, servers, terminal services), productivity software, multimedia software, desktop/systems management software, Internet services (email, Samba, etc.), networking and security, and a variety of high-level programming languages (PHP, Java, Perl, Shell scripts, C variants).
  • Experience with troubleshooting systems and applications in a complex networked environment.
  • Experience installing, patching, and maintaining diverse software packages and appliances.
  • Experience with network based storage solutions (e.g., NAS/SAN storage systems) and remote access technologies (e.g., KACE, Bomgar).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and patiently with both technical and non-technical users
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize many demands, many of which will demand timely completion
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
Assets (Nonessential):
  • CISSP, PMP, TOGAF, ITIL or related certifications are assets.
