We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Structural Engineer (Connection Design) to lead and oversee complex structural design projects within our engineering team. The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in civil and structural engineering principles, with a strong background in project management and advanced drafting tools. Duties
We are seeking a professional structural steel engineer who is experienced in designing steel connections and joints. This role involves determining the configuration of connections, the size and thickness of plates, the number and size of bolts, and the length and size of welds. You must be a multi-tasker with excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills, capable of effectively managing multiple projects within deadlines. Key responsibilities include:
Designing steel connections and resolving design-related issues associated with steel projects.
Preparing connection designs and sketches for the detailing team.
Coordinating with clients and supporting fabrication and field construction.
Managing RFIs, Change Order Requests (CORs), and technical queries.
Collaborating with the Operations Manager, Estimating/Sales team, PMs, and technical team to discuss project scope and budget and ensuring efficient engineering processes.
Lead the structural design and analysis of various construction projects, including commercial, residential, and infrastructure developments.
Utilize advanced engineering tools like Mathcad, IdeaStatica, other FEA programs, and Bluebeam for calculations, documentation, and project collaboration.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating with clients, architects, contractors, and internal teams to meet project goals and deadlines.
Conduct site visits to assess existing structures and provide technical recommendations for repairs or modifications.
Ensure all designs comply with local building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
Mentor junior engineers and draftsmen, fostering a collaborative team environment focused on quality and innovation.
Skills
10+ years of experience as a structural steel connection engineer with steel fabrication knowledge
B.Sc./M.Sc. in Civil Engineering with a structural specialization
Experience with Canadian and US steel standards (CISC, CSA S16, CSA W59, CSA W48, AISC, AWS)
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia
Registration as a US Professional Engineer (PE) is an asset
Welding engineering knowledge is an asset
Experience working within a steel fabrication shop or a detailing firm
Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, Tekla EPM, and PowerFab
Strong communication, interpersonal, and technical writing skills
Understanding the steel fabrication process, steel and fastener grades, steel connection requirements, coating types, and installation requirements
Strong computer literacy and proficiency in structural engineering software and programs
Strong knowledge and programming skills in Excel and other MS programs.
