The Senior Research Systems Analyst is a role reporting to the Director, Data Services. This position is a cornerstone in developing, delivering and operating the Institutional Data Warehouse (IDW), which supports the University's ability to make informed, evidence-based decisions. This role involves significant technical expertise in data management and modelling, alongside the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders. The successful candidate will lead the development, quality assurance, and delivery of IDW components, train and mentor users, and develop essential documentation to ensure long-term usability.
Responsibilities:
Build and Deliver the Institutional Data Warehouse (IDW) - 35%

  • Develop interim models and modules to validate design approaches.
  • Design and implement data extraction processes from administrative systems (e.g., PeopleSoft
  • Campus Solutions, HCM, Financials).
  • Collaborate with IST staff to address system performance, security, and technical issues.
Develop IDW Data Products - 30%
  • Create both scheduled and ad hoc data products using tools such as Python, SQL, Tableau, Excel, machine learning and data pipelines.
  • Design data models, assets, and solutions tailored to stakeholder needs.
  • Ensure data products align with the university's operational goals and strategic priorities.
Quality Assurance - 10%
  • Define and execute testing plans to validate the accuracy, reliability, and performance of IDW modules.
  • Monitor and manage data quality, identify anomalies, and implement corrective actions.
Training and Documentation - 20%
  • Design and deliver training sessions for IDW users across varying technical skill levels.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation, including methodologies, data dictionaries, data maps, and data flow models.
Collaboration and Support - 5%
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve data-related challenges.
  • Ensure the IDW continues to evolve in alignment with emerging technologies and institutional needs.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Computing Science or a related field (equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered). Advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in data warehouse development and data operations.
  • Strong proficiency in data modelling and data engineering, such as Azure Synapse Python, and SQL.
  • Superior knowledge with cloud-based solutions and data warehousing principles.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills to produce detailed documentations and collaborate with stakeholders.

About the Team: (IDA) mission is to serve the University of Alberta with high quality and impactful analytics, empowering data-driven decisions. The IDA unit operates in a team-oriented, fast-paced, and dynamic environment where responding quickly, clearly, and accurately is paramount. Our work focuses on building and maintaining the U of A's reporting and analytics environment, including our data warehouse, which is transitioning to the cloud. We deliver analytical products to support our key missions of teaching and research.
