Position Summary




Reporting to the Associate Chief of Data Science, the

Senior Research Engineer

will work in a multi-disciplinary team to build an enterprise-wide integrated informatics platform that will enable the seamless, secure and compliant exchange of hospital and research data. The Senior Research Engineer will support the design, development, and maintenance of a research data infrastructure platform in collaboration with diverse teams across the hospital including research, clinicians, strategy, and information management.


This role is pivotal in building a centralized metadata repository for research studies and developing scalable pipelines for data linkage and de-identification. This work will maximize the efficient flow and exchange of clinical and research data within our organization to ensure our ability to deliver on strategic commitments, including becoming a learning health system and advancing precision health. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database architecture, data governance, privacy-preserving technologies, and legal and ethical research frameworks.


Key Responsibilities



Design and implement a comprehensive metadata repository to catalog research studies, datasets, and associated documentation Build pipelines for data linkage and de-identification to support multi-study and multi-institutional research Collaborate with multiple teams across the hospital including research, strategy, and information management and technology to ensure compliance with privacy, security, and ethical standards Develop database systems ensuring optimized performance, accessibility, and ease of use Establish and maintain audit trails, access controls, and data usage monitoring in compliance with institutional policies and relevant regulations Document technical solutions and standard operating procedures Provide mentorship to research staff

Qualifications




Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a related field 5+ years of experience in software engineering or data infrastructure roles, preferably in academic, healthcare, or research settings Strong expertise in database design and implementation, including SQL Demonstrated experience with data de-identification techniques (e.g., suppression, pseudonymization) and data linkage methodologies Knowledge of relevant privacy and ethics frameworks, including Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS-2), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) or equivalent regulations Familiarity with data governance and security practices (e.g., encryption, role-based access, data lifecycle management) Experience working with health data is an asset Experience with cloud environments is an asset (e.g., GCP) * Excellent communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with researchers and knowledge users
