About The Royal ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND Funded by Veterans Affairs Canada, the Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families (formerly the Centre of Excellence on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)) was established in 2019 to provide better access to information, research, tools and expertise on PTSD and related mental health problems and illnesses. The goal of the Atlas Institute is to create knowledge networks with researchers, service providers, Veterans and their Families across Canada to increase expertise on military and Veteran mental health, suicide prevention and substance use disorders. The Atlas Institute conducts research that creates new knowledge on Veteran mental health, on treatments that work, and places the latest evidence directly into the hands of Veterans, mental health professionals, and others working with Veterans on a daily basis. The Atlas Institute shares evidence-based treatment protocols and best practices among the Veterans Affairs Canada network of Operational Stress Injury Clinics, the Canadian Forces Health Services, and with mental health professionals across the country. First responders, their families and other Canadians living with and affected by PTSD or a related mental health problem will also benefit from the information and knowledge developed at the Atlas Institute. POSITION OVERVIEW The Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families is seeking a Senior Research Associate for its Applied Research team, which is within the Research and Policy portfolio. The Senior Research Associate is responsible for identifying areas for new research, leading the development and cross-portfolio coordination of multi-stakeholder, multi-year research projects, leading the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, publishing and presenting findings, and investigating trends and opportunities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design and lead research projects on priorities specific to Veterans\xe2\x80\x99 and Veteran Family members\xe2\x80\x99 mental health;
  • Use quantitative and qualitative research and data analysis methods, and adhere to best practice and ethics requirements and considerations;
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders, including Veterans and Veteran Family members, on research projects;
  • Work cross-functionally in support of the successful execution and launch of research projects;
  • Prepare reports, manuscripts, and presentations on research findings, present research findings at conferences and webinars, and support the development of knowledge mobilization products related to research projects;
  • Support Senior and Executive Leadership in their engagement with external stakeholders with analysis, strategic insight, briefing materials, reviews of the literature, and presentations;
  • Investigate trends in mental health care system, clinical research, and mental health and addictions issues affecting Veterans and their families, identify common themes and prepare clearly articulated written analyses and papers;
  • Develop/enhance and maintain a working knowledge of current research in Veterans\xe2\x80\x99 and Veteran Family member mental health.
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
  • Demonstrable success working in results-oriented and in-flux environments, in interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams, and in partnerships with groups such as policy makers, researchers, advocates, service providers, and people with lived experience;
  • Experience supporting or leading quantitative and qualitative research, with demonstrated knowledge of or exposure to the full project lifestyle;
  • Knowledge of the mental health care sector and mental health policy context;
  • Exceptional writing skills and ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences;
  • Proven expertise leading qualitative and quantitative research studies, including knowledge syntheses and systematic reviews, as well as expertise with advanced data analysis techniques;
  • Demonstrated collaboration and interpersonal skills, within and across departments and with external stakeholders;
  • Success working independently and as part of cross-functional teams;
  • Demonstrated respect for understanding the experiences of Veterans and Veteran Family members, people living with mental health problems and illnesses, diverse populations;
  • Commitment to the vision of a transformed, person-centred mental health systems and supports.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., psychology, sociology, public health, epidemiology), or the equivalent combination of education and experience with a superior record of achievement;
  • A minimum of five years\xe2\x80\x99 research experience, including leading multi-year studies, and publishing manuscripts and/or reports on findings;
  • Track record of building and maintaining positive relationships and collaborations with a diverse range of stakeholders;
  • Knowledge of the research landscape in Canada, including granting/funding and publication processes;
  • Proficient computer skills, including research software (e.g., NVivo; SPSS; R; Qualtrics; RedCap), business communication tools, videoconferencing platforms, and project management solutions;
  • Fluency in French will be considered a strong asset;
  • Familiarity and background working with military Veterans and family members will be considered a strong asset.
COMPENSATION
  • Competitive salary and benefits package, including 4 weeks of paid vacation and enrollment in the HOOP Pension Plan;

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Working standard office hours with start and end time flexibility (37.5 hrs/week). Option for a condensed 4-day work week available upon approval;
