Senior Research Assistant, Design Based Professional Learning On Ai In Education

Winnipeg, MB, Canada

Job Description

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.
Position Overview:
Generative artificial intelligence (genAI) is transforming the educational landscape. Teachers, students, parents, and researchers are simultaneously excited at genAI's potential to transform teaching and learning, and worried about the pedagogical, ethical, and societal implications of tools that can generate text, images, and videos at the click of a button (Corbin et al., 2025; DeLuca et al., 2025; Perkins et al., 2024).
Using a design-based professional learning model (Friesen & Brown, 2022; McKenney & Reeves, 2019; Timperley, 2015), teachers and teacher leaders in the Winnipeg School Division will be invited to participate in a professional learning community (Owen, 2014) to examine the following question: What are the most powerful actions teachers can take to foster sound, ethical, useful approaches to generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in teaching, learning, and assessment?
The Senior Research Assistant will support this research project by attending and supporting 6 professional learning sessions and transcribing interviews with participating teachers. The Senior Research Assistant will complete and compile researcher field notes for each session; collate and organize documents; and transcribe interview recordings, review those transcripts for accuracy and clarity, and de-identify the transcripts for researcher/participant review.
Duties:

  • The Senior Research Assistant will be required to complete their TCPS 2 2022 CORE certificate before accessing study data. TCPS 2 2022 orients researchers (and research assistants) to the ethical requirements for studies involving human participants.
  • Attend and support each of 6 professional learning sessions between January and June 2026. At each session, the Senior Research Assistant will complete researcher field notes and compile those field notes for analysis.
  • Access and listen to audio recordings from the data corpus, transcribe those recordings, review transcripts for accuracy and clarity, and de-identify the transcripts for researcher/participant review.
  • Meet regularly with the Principal Investigator (Michael Holden) during the project.
Qualifications:
  • Has completed at least the first year of an undergraduate degree, with strong preference for students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (BEd) or equivalent program.
  • Have experience conducting educational research, with strong preference for candidates with prior research experience, especially in the areas of classroom assessment, artificial intelligence, or teacher professional learning.
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational skills and have experience organizing research data and working independently as part of a research team.
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates who are available on the following days, when the 6 professional learning sessions are scheduled:
  • Tuesday, January 27 (9:00am-3:30pm)
  • Tuesday, February 24 (1:00-3:30pm)
  • Tuesday, March 24 (1:00-3:30pm)
  • Tuesday, April 21 (1:00-3:30pm)
  • Tuesday, May 26 (1:00-3:30pm)
  • Tuesday, June 23 (1:00-3:30pm)
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from January 12, 2026 - August 31, 2026, and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-100 hours.
Note: This position is represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada - Research Capacity Unit.
Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person.
