Job Description

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

The position will assist with archival research and the recording of oral histories regarding Rocky Cree place names, to preserve the knowledge of Asiniskaw Ithiniwak culture. We plan to make audio and video recordings of Elders and Knowledge Keepers sharing their memories of specific places, at the locations being described.

Duties:

• Research primary documents and scholarly publications pertaining to Rocky Cree history.
• Document research findings.
• Conduct, record, and transcribe interviews with Indigenous Knowledge Keepers.

Qualifications:

• Preference will be given to students of History or Indigenous Studies at the University of Winnipeg.
• Preference will be given to candidates proficient in Microsoft Office.
• Preference will be given to candidates able to climb a spiral staircase leading to the Centre for Rupert\'s Land Studies in the University of Winnipeg library.
• Preference will be given to candidates able to travel to Northern Manitoba.

Condition(s) of Employment:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from September 11, 2023 - April 5, 2024, and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-208 hours.
