JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of a Senior Protection & Controls Officer at our Cameron Falls Work Centre, in Cameron Falls, ON.

Reporting to the Senior Protection & Controls Supervisor, this position is responsible to to provide technical advice, guidance, and assessments on the maintenance of electrical and P&C equipment and systems, the Senior Protection & Controls Officer will conduct engineering studies and assessments, prepare technical specifications and purchase recommendations, and administer contracts related to equipment and services acquisitions. Additionally, further role responsibilities include design, or reviewing designs of electrical and P&C equipment and systems to meet performance expectations and comply with safety standards. While this position is located at our Cameron Falls Work Centre, travel to other generating stations within North Western Ontario will be required.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provide authorized engineering approvals in accordance with applicable legislation.
  • Prepare technical procedures, standards and specifications for new and replacement equipment relating to electrical maintenance work.
  • Conduct site investigations to observe, evaluate and analyze engineering data relative to engineering design and recommend action
  • Review proposals submitted for maintenance, rehabilitation or upgrading work, and submit recommendations.
  • Manage contracts or act as a single point of contact for general and specialized electrical engineering services.
  • Investigate new technologies, equipment, tools, and methods for use in the operation and maintenance of hydroelectric generating station.
  • Maintaining continuous surveillance of developments in the hydroelectric industry to ensure that relevant technology, procedures, and methods are considered in OPG work activities.
  • Assist with and/or oversee installation of and commissioning of new electrical systems and with troubleshooting existing systems.
EDUCATION
  • Must hold a 4-year University degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent level of education;
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of experience as an Electrical Engineer
  • Prior experience working in Hydroelectric generating stations
  • Prior experience working in an industrial Power Systems or Utilities organization
  • Experience with planning and conducting assessments, studies, inspections, investigations, designing, evaluating, construction monitoring and maintenance of electrical works associated with hydroelectric and thermal generating stations
  • Ability to independently problem solve with methods and tools required for electrical engineering applications
  • Experience with Electrical Power Apparatus and Protection and Control Systems
  • Well versed in software associated with electrical engineering, monitoring and instrumentation modeling and analysis
  • Experience in analysis and electrical testing results
  • Demonstrated engineering knowledge that relates to the theories, practice-in-design, analysis and development of a wide variety of electrical devices, process control equipment and digital equipment systems, particularly associated with major electrical power generation plants
  • An engineering background in the design and operation of major electrical facilities, with particular emphasis on the variety of electrical equipment and systems associated with hydroelectric facilities
  • Full knowledge related to engineering design, modification or replacement of either power distribution systems, major electrical equipment, layout and diagram design or hydroelectric plant protection, control and automation, including the preparation of specifications and provision of study and release estimates.
  • Knowledge of the process of procurement of equipment and materials, including experience in planning, organizing and coordinating work programs and maintaining the control of costs, quality and schedule
  • Knowledge of relevant computer applications (Microsoft Office and AutoCAD)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with software development for Programmable Logic Controllers
