Description:

Under general direction of the Senior Manager, Project Delivery and working with the client, the Senior Project Manager (SPM) is the primary point of contact for assigned projects. They are responsible for the overall implementation of projects through the lifecycle of a project including: planning, consultant selection, design, tender and contractor selection, construction, commissioning and occupancy. The incumbent prepares, reviews and manages correspondence, reviews and provides feedback on the design documentation, manages the design review process and assists the client to ensure understanding and agreement on decisions. The SPM manages changes in project scope, identifies potential risks and devises contingency plans to resolve the changes.

In overseeing major construction and renovation projects, the Senior Project Manager (SPM) is responsible for organizing coordination meetings with the client and other internal and external stakeholders to acheive the overall projects goals. Through frequent, timely and clear communication with all parties, the SPM is responsible for meeting budget and project schedule, upholding University standards and ensuring completeness to the satisfaction of the client.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

EDUCATION:
  • University degree in Engineering or Architecture with a professional designation (must be a registered P.Eng or OAA licensed in Ontario).
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum eight years\' related experience in the construction industry, including some related experience in design.
  • Experience managing small to large construction projects of varying complexity
  • Experience with contractual methods and issues and ability to manage risks.
  • Experience in project planning, pre-development services and implementation of major capital projects in the post-secondary education sector or similar complexity is required
  • Experience in managing and developing all project management related activities including project scope, schedule, risk management, and budget to ensure projects deliver expected outcomes on time and within expected cost.
  • Experience directing all available resources to ensure the success of a project team in order to ensure successful delivery of the project.
  • Experience providing direction and advice to personnel assigned to individual projects, through all project stages (e.g., on administrative, design, editing, technical, estimating, and priority issues as appropriate).
  • Experience reviewing and advising on project scope and contract documents (e.g., Statement of Work, purchase requisitions, change orders for contracts and addenda for consultant agreements).
  • Experience with complex urban projects involving multiple roles of owner, planner and designer required. Must have experience in providing complex services in an academic or equivalent diverse environment, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse community.
SKILLS:
  • Strong computer-based projects scheduling/management skills (e.g., MS Project) and other applications (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, project management and leadership skills.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills with superior interpersonal skills to develop and maintain meaningful relationships with applicable external entities such as stakeholders, external partners, contractors, subcontractors, and other suppliers.
  • Provides timely project communications to stakeholders to ensure everyone is kept informed to project changes and eliminates surprises.
  • Strong budget management skills.
OTHER:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and relevant legislation, and architectural and sustainability best practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of municipal development approvals process in the City of Toronto.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple duties concurrently with frequently changing priorities and deadlines.
