As the Senior Project Engineer, you will take a lead role in managing and delivering highly complex vertical infrastructure projects valued between approximately $50M - $200M+. These projects include recreation facilities, fire stations, operations facilities, libraries, mixed-use sites, and other critical municipal infrastructure. You will oversee design and procurement through construction and closeout ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. You will work closely with business units and service lines across the corporation to align project outcomes with organizational goals. As a Senior Professional Engineer in the Buildings and Architecture division, you will also support and collaborate with a team of internal engineers, architects, and project managers to provide technical expertise on City of Calgary projects. This position is central to shaping Calgary's future infrastructure. By combining strong project management leadership with engineering expertise, you will drive successful delivery of major civic projects that create lasting value for the community. Primary duties include:
Lead project planning, design and execution: Develop project plans, schedules, budgets, and performance metrics to ensure successful delivery of high-risk capital projects.
Procurement and consultant management: Hire and oversee architectural and engineering consultants and contractors, managing procurement processes and ensuring deliverables meet scope, schedule, and quality requirements.
Project oversight: Independently manage design, construction, and handover of high-complexity, high-risk projects, ensuring seamless transitions between project phases.
Contract administration: Manage and administer contracts, review and approve change orders and extensions, and ensure compliance with specifications and standards. Analyze change requests and/or value management opportunities for cost, necessity and feasibility and identify innovative solutions.
Risk management: Identify potential risks early and implement mitigation strategies using sound engineering judgment and project management best practices.
Interested party coordination: Build strong working relationships with internal business units, external partners, and community interested parties to align project outcomes with City priorities.
Team leadership: May lead project or program teams, including internal staff and administrators, fostering collaboration and accountability.
Reporting and communication: Prepare and deliver clear, ongoing progress reports to senior management and Council, ensuring transparency and informed decision-making.
Technical oversight: Provide design guidance to consultants and apply engineering expertise to solve complex problems with innovative, practical solutions.
Subject matter expert: May act as Discipline Champion for Supply's engineering review process and prequalification process under engineering categories.
Policy and standards development: Contribute to the creation and maintenance of guidelines, standards, and policies governing engineering design and construction.
