The Role
Fortis Group is seeking a Senior Project Director to join our team. The Senior Project Director will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight to ensure all construction projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. Working collaboratively with the project delivery team, this role will be responsible for managing and developing high-performing teams, fostering a culture of accountability, communication, and excellence across all phases of project execution.
The Senior Project Director will oversee multiple project managers, superintendents, and support staff, providing mentorship, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities to ensure consistent project delivery standards. This role will also play a key part in resource planning, workload distribution, and talent management to align staffing with project needs and company goals.
In addition, the Senior Project Director will develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and other stakeholders, providing regular updates on project progress and proactively addressing challenges. They will report to and work collaboratively with the VP of Operations to establish, refine, and implement project management procedures and protocols that support Fortis' commitment to quality, safety, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities:
Develop overall project strategy, objectives, and execution plans
Define project scope, goals, and deliverables in alignment with organizational objectives
Oversee feasibility studies, risk assessments, and resource planning
Establish project governance structures and decision-making processes
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of project managers, superintendents, and support staff to ensure high-quality project delivery
Establish clear goals, performance expectations, and accountability measures for all project team members
Oversee staffing plans, resource allocation, and workload balancing across multiple active projects
Conduct regular project team meetings to review progress, address challenges, and ensure alignment with project goals and schedules
Oversee recruitment and provide coaching and professional development opportunities to strengthen leadership and technical skills within the project team
Evaluate team performance, conduct performance reviews, and implement improvement plans as needed
Promote cross-functional collaboration among project management, field operations, estimating, and preconstruction teams
Ensure effective scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation across all project phases
Approve major project plans, changes, and milestone
Monitor progress against key performance indicators (KPIs)
Develop and manage project budgets, forecasts, and cost-control strategies
Negotiate and approve major contracts, subcontracts, and procurement agreements
Oversee financial reporting, claims management, and change orders
Ensure compliance with contract terms and financial objectives
Serve as the primary liaison between clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams
Communicate project progress, risks, and issues to senior management and stakeholders
Build and maintain strong client relationships to ensure satisfaction and repeat business
Ensure adherence to health and safety standards
Oversee quality assurance and control procedures
Ensure all construction activities comply with legal, regulatory, and industry standards
Identify potential project risks and implement mitigation strategies
Lead crisis management and problem-solving efforts when issues arise
Ensure proactive risk monitoring throughout the project life cycle
Foster a collaborative and safety-conscious work culture
Provide executive-level project reports on schedule, cost, scope, and quality
Maintain comprehensive project documentation and records
Support post-project evaluation and lessons-learned initiatives
Oversee project completion, commissioning, and handover to the client
Ensure defects liability management and closeout documentation are completed
Support transition to operations or facilities management as required
Qualifications:
Post-secondary diploma or degree in a related engineering or construction management discipline
Minimum 10 years of proven experience in project management from project pursuit to project closeout, overseeing commercial construction projects (hard bid, AFP and/or negotiated)
Previous management experience within a mid - large general contractor; experience in a unionized environment an asset
P.Eng and/or LEED certifications an asset
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, field drawings and plans
A solid understanding of all construction trades and construction techniques
Knowledge of local, provincial, and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances, and legislation, including OH&S regulations and Building Codes
Demonstrated ability to exercise necessary cost control measures.
Familiarity with Labour relations and collective agreement management
Familiarity with project accounting systems
A valid class G Driver's license and access to a vehicle is required
